I haven been looking some time to up date my trailer 12gvw 16' to the next size larger in length and weight 18' 14gvw. Good used trailers are very hard to find and usually if you get a good one, you are within $500 of a new one. This one caught my eye. Not all beat up, Owner said it needed brakes, and some lights replaced and due for a paint job. He owned it for 5 years and said he bought it off a farmer and no title and did not know who the mfg. was. I went and looked at it. It is very well made, welds are a work of art, I would say it is 15 years old, no rust on it.(little underneath fenders) original , fenders are 3\16" (never seen any that heavy) floor is worn but will last me the rest of my life because I keep my trailers inside. I made the deal and yes I will have within $500 of what I could have bought a new one for but not this quality and low deck height. I have looked at all kinds of trailers but have not seen any like this one that will tell me who made it. I will try and post a couple of pictures, pay close attention to the tail lights as I have never seen a trailer with lights mounted like that, and the deck. It is divided into about 4 1/2 ' sections. (just loosen the nuts on the under side, take the strap off and you can replace a board if broken) I replaced the brake shoes, gave it a farmers paint job. I even wire brushed up underneath the fenders, sprayed it with Rust Oilum paint and had some old two part Sherman Williams two part epoxy and hand painted them underneath. Would just like to find mfg. who made it. Only number I can find is stamped on tongue J.N.07270-- 100_0227.JPGDSCN1113.JPGDSCN1119.JPG

No tag on frame. My last trailer had a tag when I got it but after 12 years of using it and gravel bouncing up it simply wore off and you couldn't tell it ever had one, but I still had a title for it. Only thing stamped on tongue J.N.07270--

In this state you are required to plate trailers. A title describing the make of the trailer is required to register the trailer. Are you required to plate trailers in OH? I wouldn't buy a vehicle without a title. What is your plan to get license plates for the trailer?

The third picture has a plate on the left fender.

In Ohio, if you do not know who the mfg. is or you don't have a title you just have to show who you bought it off of. (bill of sale) I think over 4k you have to have a title. I just sold another trailer that was registered as home built I'll just probably switch the tag. The reason I would like to know who made it is because when I sell it, it would be worth a little more. I just sold one trailer with a title and another trailer without title, got the same price out of each.

I have 2 trailers that were locally built. One by a steel fab shop. He took a flatbed off the old truck and basically put axles under it. Because it was over a specified empty weight , I had to take receipts and bill of sale from the fab shop, to sheriff's office. Then someone came out and put a stick on number tag on it for identification. Pretty sure that tag is now gone seeing how the trailer has been blasted and repainted. The second trailer I had the material cut to length and my brother welded it together. It was for a small catamaran sail boat. It was under the specified empty weight, so no inspection, no id tag, just bill of sale for the materials purchased. So my guess your trailer was considered home built like mine. Stamp numbers would be better than the stick on kind. Just my thoughts. Nice looking trailer. Jon

So for those who have bought a home built with a bill of sale, is there any more problems with registering it than a person who builds one from scratch and has receipts for everything? So if I ever decide to sell this what do I need to do so the other person can register it. Just give him a bill of sale or give him the bill of sale from the person I purchased it from. Also if I get it registered and sell it to a person out of state that requires a title, will they accept a bill of sale and proof I owned it and issue a title. That's why I am trying to find out who made it. The fellow who I bought it off of let me use his tag to bring it home and told me to just destroy it. Is there any way to back track and find out where it came from? You would think some one on here would recognize who made it, especially some mfg. that visit this site. I am sure it is factory built and not home built.

It varies by state as to what is required. In Wyoming you must have a title and bill of sale to register a trailer and plates are required.

I recently sold a trailer I made 20 plus years ago. I had never had a title for it but it had been registered every year. Possibly a title wasn't required back then but now that I was selling it I had to send pictures and a description of the trailer to the state. They also wanted receipts showing I purchased the materials to make the trailer but I just told them I didn't have that info any more. They sent me a title with an id number to stamp into the tongue and all was good.

I think the biggest problem is states are trying to track stolen trailers. Like someone else said, I wouldn't buy a trailer that didn't have a title.
