Just got this GT275 for free from a friend of a friend. Kept it outside for two weeks in order to kill all the mice living in it before bringing it into my attached garage. Got 6 in total. Today I took the top covers off of the engine to get a look at what its condition was. I must say, i was pretty amazed even knowing they were living in there.

Actually, no stink at all and I havent seen anything chewed yet.
Of course I tried starting it quick just to see what moved and what was frozen and of course i heard a click then nothing.

Starter is at the mechanic now being cleaned up and having a new solenoid put on. Hopefully that was it.... I have another thread from a day ago going about that if youre interested :)

This is how i found the tractor. All four tires flat. Had to drag onto my buddys trailer through the mud as mice jumped for there lives. By the time i got it here there was one mouse on the trailer that got stomped, one in the driveway that got punted. Then over the course of the next week or so the last four were trapped in my garage. Boo Hoo, lol.

Actually most of the mouse stuff came out easily with the Shop Vac. The stuff that was really stuck on the sides and inside the heat sink fins of the engine i just poked at with a screwdriver to loosen while i kept the vacuum on it. Actually wasnt too bad. Took about 20 min solid of vacuuming though! There was quite a bit of bedding and acorn shells in there!

I can turn the flywheel by hand relatively easily about 1/4 turn then it slows down and i dont want to force it. That sounds normal to me, prob the compression of the engine making it harder to turn??? Or is it two dozen mouse skeletons in the combustion chamber? LOL

Pull the spark plug and try to turn it...
should have no compression then... If it is hard to turn then... I would drain the oil and refill to see how it looks....

We had a mouse that winter-nested in my parent's riding mower several years ago. The nest was under the engine cover, pretty much like the one you have on that JD. Dad cranked it up in the spring to cut grass and it smoked pretty bad till it burned most of it out. ;) He didn't realize what was going on and we were lucky it didn't catch on fire!

I had a rat chew hole in the fuel return lines on the injection system. I had diesel all over the place!

Yea im gonna drain the oil anyways before i go too much farther with this.

Looks like some little bite marks on the spark plug wire at the coil but nothing serious. Once I give the engine a cleaning with soap and water ill pull that wire off. Im so paranoid about all the stories i hear about mice carrying diseases that i dont even want to touch this until its CLEAN! I was even worried vacuuming the crap outta there that i was breathing in the vac exhaust.

Ill prob grow a tail before too long....
