What motor oil is in my new 2520?

I just looked at my receipt from my 50 hour service and the JD dealer put in "15/40 Plus" oil. Should I be concerned?

I asked my dealer about the break in oil at 50 hours.
I was told 50 hrs is enough time for the engine to seat. Some might disagree because of what is actually stated in a document somewhere about waiting for the 100 hour mark. Well, like I stated, mine was at 50 hr per a dealer conversation. Maybe the 100 hour deal,is to cover all the possibilities, like the engine not being "worked" hard for alot of those first 100. Mine was! If it wasn't doing heavy loader work,it was at max rpm cutting grass for those first 50 hours,so I'm not going to worry about the break in being changed out too soon.:)

No is my thought especially if your tractor is in a heated space or has the block heater. If temps get to -20F then lighter oil would be preferred.

Other than at start up 5W-40 and 15W-40 in an operating tractor are about equal.

Thanks, everyone for responding.

It looks like there are a number of (expensive) 5W-40 synthetic oils readily available in my area (Mobil1, Rotella), so I will probably go that route next year when I hit 50 hours. I find it curious that Deere recommends a 5W-30 diesel engine oil that apparently doesn't exist!

BP: No mention in the manual of adding more break-in oil at 50 hours. My manual just says change oil and filter.

I use JD Plus-50 II sometimes and New Holland Ambra MasterGold HSP both at 15W40 I run this all year round. I used break in oil on my 5085M for 250 hours. I had no problems on it what so ever. I just didn't have time to change it during that time.

I am curious what people think is different about the "break in oil" that comes in the machines? I don't think there is a significant difference between it and whatever you buy at the store. I've never seen "break in oil" for sale, although I believe I have used a non-detergent oil in a rebuilt air cooled engine for the first 25 hours or so.

I am sure I have read it and I know I have been told by a JD mech. to use break-in oil until it stops using oil if it uses any. If the manual says to change at the first 50 hrs and it is still using some oil then refill with break-in oil. If it is not using then replace with what ever you are going to use. JD is about the only one that has a proper break-in oil. Good stuff and recommended for new engines.

You'll see it sitting on the shelf at your John Deere dealer with the rest of the fluids.

When you see the link - John Deere - Helpful links you will see that it is a diesel. If that is yours, then I suggest the appropriate and applicable SAE's for the engine and all other drive train lubricants, including the hydraulic fluid with synthetic. If you're looking for a place get superior product options, go to your favorite supplier.
