Not sure where to post this question, but since it is a project...

I am in the process of rebuilding/repainting my Dearborn plow. I got all the parts and new bolts ready to go. The smaller parts were blasted in a small bead blaster and the larger ones were wire brushed the best I could. I did buy one can of Rustoleums "rust reformer" but have not used it yet.

My question is, what brand paints or primers have you used on a implement. I have used Rustoleum in the past on other things and had good results but willing to try others. TSC has regular "implement paint", does this hold up better? Is the rust reformer or primer the better wa y to go? Thanks

On my boxblade and back blade I used a rust paint from Home Hardware. I did this to partly protect the steel but also to make me more visible on the road. I made sure the paint on the boxblade was well cleaned and the steel on the backblade was given a light sanding. The big thing is you have prepped the steel for paint so there should be no old oil/grease or loose paint. Sounds like that is done already. I have found good quality rust paint is designed to go right on clean steel surfaces. It all depends how fussy you are as I'm sure some responses will tell you to primer it. I have an old metal gate I painted with a rust paint about 20 years ago and it is still in good shape. We get lots of rain here and the gate is on a old road in the bush. The rust paints I have used are self primering (contain primer in the paint). Good luck with you project and post some before and after pics.

Out west, you could "get away" with not using a primer, although I wouldn't do it that way. In Ohio, we get 4 seasons, so a good oil base primer would be a must. Personally, I would go to your local paint supplier, and get a quart, and have them tint it as well. It doesn't cost any extra. Then follow it up with a couple coats of oil paint. You will only "protect" your metal anyhow. This kind of maintenance work is something that will continually be necessary every 6 years or so. Unless you're going to send it out to be powder coated.

I have no experience with this stuff, but I am going to try it in the spring on the bottom of my dump trailer, and the underside of my mower deck. Go to POR15, Inc. - Stop Rust Permanently - Repair Gas & Fuel Tanks and check this stuff out. It has gotten a fair amount of reviews on this site as well. This would be used as your primer, and wouldn't be tinted, and then you would topcoat like normal.

Have fun,

John

I have used POR-15 and Rust Bullet. Both are expensive, but if they work, they would be worth it. I found Rust Bullet to perform much, much better. Also you do not need to overcoat it (POR15 degrades in UV light).

Rust Bullet sticks like crazy, does not flake off or easily scrape off---it is what I will always use on my implements
