I found this planter locally going up for auction. I have not seen it first hand, so the pic is all I got. it looks like it may be a JD 71 but I am not sure. I would like to know what it is, if it would be worth fixing up, parts available?, what should I pay for it? I have a 52 horse tractor, and am thinking a 2-4 row seeder would be ideal, what would be some other seeders to look at, that will do a good job, and not break the bank. the international seeders come up fairly often for cheap, are they any good?

Those are in fact Deere #71 Flex Planter row units mounted on a bedder of some sort. Row units can be mounted directly to a 3-point toolbar. Without a much better look at the bedder, I'd be hesitant to say how much tractor that would take to pull. Planter units alone require little hp.

#71 row units in average condition sell for $175 to $200 each. Built up as a finished planter, they sell for around $400(+) per row. If the planter can be bought right, I'd loose the bedder and build a dedicated 3-point toolbar. I took my old 4 row planter and built this 2-row for planing sweet corn.

Are you looking for something for personal use or commercial use? If you only want to plant food plots and small plots then the International 56 planter will work great. The John Deere planters are good units also and parts are readily available for them.

I have been using a 4 row International 56 planter for around 10 years now. I have never had a problem with it but I also take care of my equipment. I let a "friend" borrow it once and it came back with a couple bent rods and a "oh, you can bend them back" explanation. It was the last time he used any of my equipment.

The planter you pictured is one that I have never seen before. I have no idea what it is and unless someone on here has more info to help you out I would be nervous about finding parts unless you can find a stamp on them to indicate they are OEM parts from John Deere or one of the other OEM's.

Those are YETTER planter units, Yetter bought the rights to building the JD 71 units. Those are not cheap units, new they are about 1200 per row unit. So do not be surprised when the price goes HIGH, if there are others there that know what they are worth.

PS, they use the same plates as the JD 71 units.

Good luck at the auction

They may be Yetter, as they're painted black, but I don't recall the press wheels being yellow. (Pretty sure they're white on Yetters) Yetter built Deere's #71 under contract through the entire production run. They bought the design rights from Deere when Deere stopped selling them. Yetter still calls theirs "#71" too. They are the same EXACT planter units, part for part, regardless of which name is on them.

well I went to the auction, and the seeder units were removed from the bedder, and were nowhere to be found. kind of like a bait and switch. I sent an e-mail to the auction company to see if they still had them. I was not too happy, it is a 2 hr drive from home. they did have a a 6 or 8 row planter with JD 71 planter units on it, with coulters mounted about 4ft in front of the units. it was just way too big for me to move from there, and probabally was way out of my price range.
