Buying Advice What Rear Tine Rototiller to buy

I have had a Husqvarna for about ten years. It has a Subaru engine and dual direction tines. I would buy another.

I paid $1000 for a used 5' King Kutter II. Guy I bought it from on Craigslist bought it for his 8N, but it was too big. It is built like a tank. It turns field into garden in two passes. I used a walk behind on my 20x40 garden for a year or two, and tilling it took a couple of hours each spring. Now it takes longer to turn the tractor around for the next pass than the actual tilling. I can prepare the garden in 10 minutes. I keep the tiller on the tractor all year long as a 650 lb counter weight when doing loader work and when snowplowing in winter.

Looking to get a land pride RTA1266 for $1550. It was like brand new only used for a small garden. Hope it's a good choice

I have that exact same 60" KK tiller.
It truly is a brute!

Land Pride makes nice stuff.
I am sure you will be very happy with that.
Be certain to check the gearbox oil, and grease fittings before using

The old Troybilt Horses with the Kohler 7 HP would be what I would look for if I was getting one again. Mine is a 6 HP Tecumseh (yeah I know) that I got 2nd hand for a song about 10 years ago. The Tecumseh actually has never let me down. I started it right up last weekend in anticipation of spring. My BCS 722 has a 8 HP Briggs IC engine. The BCS is a little more finesse and Troybilt brute.

Hey Fried - I have an old Troy Bilt Horse( new in '82) - I'm only 75 and breaking new ground with that galloping beast would tear me up. Wasn't bad at all when I was younger in '82. I still remember the summer of '82 - breaking new ground - momentarily turned it over to the wife - it got away from her and we chased that dam Horse for about 150 feet. It finally hit a rut - laid over on its side and quit galloping. For a short ways it was actually dragging the wife as she tried to control the situation. Not so funny at the time - later, we laughed our hines off.

Had a similar experience in the early 70s with a Troybuilt Horse, only I didn't let go, it hooked up into some wire grass sod, leaped ahead with me hanging on for dear life. It yanked me off my feet and I ended up slamming my right shin into the tine guard, I still have the scar to prove it.
That taught me the lesson to never try to muscle a Troybuilt, you end up pushing the tines into the ground and then the rodeo starts!
I prepared my garden patch for years with a pony model Troybuilt, it would take about a week to do so, now it takes about an hour with a 60" tiller mounted on the Massey ( and I don't feel like I have just taken a beating afterwards). The pony is used just for cultivating now.

Back in the mid 80's I bought a new 8 HP Troy Bilt and used it for 10 years or so. Replaced the rear tines a couple of times. Eventually sold it at auction for what I paid in 85. I had to replace the solenoid. Cranked right up. Several folks got in a bidding war and I did good. If buying used that is what I would look for. Buying used 3 point tillers is challenging to find a decent deal.

I bought one last year and shopped heavily before the purchase. Seems most are all alike with a piece of steel moved here or there. I bought the 6' TSC model for just under $2k and beat the begeebies out of it last year and it didn't even blink.....well yeah I beat the paint off the 54 tines.
