What replaced it?
It is my understanding John Deere produced the last 455 in 2001.

What model did they replace it with the next year?

The X400 has been discontinued. Replaced by the X500 series. The next step up is the X700. I believe the X700 series offers cat 1 (limited) 3 point if that is important to you.

IMHO, the X700 diesel models are the only current Deere models that are really equivalents to the old 455, the 455 being the top of the line GT of its time as the X700 is now.

I was looking at the X series before I bought my 455, and in my opnion they are still tough built tractors, although I do find the plastic to not be as durable or in other words "Lighter" then the older 400 series. The hood is very nice on the X series, although I do find the visablity from the drivers seat to be better on the 455 over the X495. Not sure how the 62C deck performs on the X series but I do know that the old 400 series 60 inch decks are pretty impressive though. Take Care Jason B

The 495, now the 700 something, is as heavy duty as the 455, with more engine power. In my opinion, which counts for almost nothing, they are among the best--if not the best--lawn and garden tractors ever made. I used my X595 as a true compact tractor for three years before upgrading to a larger machine, and it did fine. I would probably still have it if it had a better hydraulic system for operating simultaneous implements.
