Tractor
John Deere 990 2-wheel drive
I have a JD990 (40 hp) two-wheel drive. What size box blade
can I logically use for this tractor? I want the heavy duty
model. I want the largest I can pull safely and practically.
What do you veterans think?

Easily a 6', and probably a 7' would do nicely possibly a little larger. Boxblading with huge boxblades can be a little rough as you're really picking up a lot of weight, but your tractor should handle either of these. I hope you have 4WD as that will help a lot.
Maybe some others with similar tractor HP and larger BBs can offer their experiences. John

Don't go over a 6', sense you have 2-wd.

Me I would go with the heaviest and narrowest box blade that will cover your tire tracks. Ground engaging implements are when you will most miss 4 wheel drive and a box blade that is full can be pretty demanding.

Hit some of the state and county auctions for a Gannon or other heavy duty. Round here, it seems police jur and state dept use good heavy stuff. So you'll know the diff, first go to TSC etc and look at what you don't want - for what you're trying to do. The $300/new one won't last long in roots with a tractor big enough to tear it up.
Good luck and happy huntin'.

Thanks, fellas, for the welcome info on box blades. I think I
will go with a 6-foot heavy duty. That little 990 is stout!!!

JD, did you edit that to read two wheel drive or have I done it again? LOL /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif John

John, you did it again. If he had edited it there would've been a notation stating it. No big deal though, I do it all the time. I just blame it on my reading glasses.

Actually Kevin, you have a choice of whether to mark as edited or not. So there's still a chance I'm not too messed up! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif John
