Tractor Sizing what size bushog style mower

i have a yanmar 1500 and at present use to with a 5 ft finish mower. i want to get a bushog type rotary mower for this tractor and need advice as to what size mower this machine can handle. thanks

I always recommend going with a 48" or even a 42" just because of the weight of the brush mowers. Those types of mowers are typically used on uneven ground and can get very unstable if you get one that is too heavy. You should have enough power to run a 5' mower in moderately high weeds though if you wanted to.

I have a YM 2000 and I use a 5' Bushhog but I had to add some suitcase weights. But if I buy another Bushhog it will be a 4' where it will be the same width as the tarctor less chance of hitting a tree.

I agree... On a 1500 I would go with the 42 inch and some suitcase weights up front at least two if not three. I tend to be conservative and I am sure there are others that have a 4 fts and have not had any problems. If you are going to do any work on hills you should consider filling the rear tires, as it make a big difference and will feel more stable. If you property is flat then it is not as much of a necessity.

For your sized tractor I would recommend a 42" mower especially if you have real heavy grass to cut in the spring. Until recently I was using a Kabota of about 30 HP with a 5 ft mower. There are places on my property where the load is too much for this setup.

I have a 4' brushhog on my 1500D, actually used it yesterday and will again today once I get off this fourm... I would not go any larger than a 48" due to the stability issues already mentioned, there is a fair amount of weight toward the back of the unit with the wheel, bracing and rear side of the deck. A 5' would put that weight just that much more further out. If you are on a hill going at a slant and get the front of the hog dragging then lift it up, you will have that weight levering against you as it shifts to the side. Gives you that uneasy filling inside if your not expecting it. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
