I have a JD compact 4520 4x4 with wheel weights and loader. It is 53 HP. I am looking for disc and am trying to decide what size disc I can pull. I just had some clearing done and intend to put in food plots. the area is about 150 feet wide and 1100 feet long. About 3 1/2 acres. I have 2 other small plots. I really wonder if I can pull a 10 foot wheeled disc ? Just joined this sight and would really appreciate any insight someone could share. I see an international 470 on craigslist. It has wings but am thinking of removing them and using the main disc. Am I stupid ?? I also don't understand anything about disc. Like any tool there has to be a differance but right now I need some advise on disc size.

The key to how much disc can u pull is ground conditions and soil type. Hard the disc won't cut in much and pull easy .. Fresh plowed or tilled and when the disc blades sink to the hub axle it'll pull hard.

I've struggled at times with 100 hp on 12' .. I've got cylinder collars to set my depth

I purchased a disc harrow in may for my CUT for similar use. The first post in the linked thread was very helpful to me.

Why are you considering such a wide harrow for these small plots? Another important factor is weight per disc. My unit has 40 lbs and works well in my plots

Number of blades: 20
Blade diameter: 18"
Blade thickness: 3mm
Width: 6.5'
Weight: 800 lbs

I was thinking wider would allow me to finish with less passes. Saving time and maybe fuel.

Sounds like you want a pull disk. Honestly there are so many variables that all any of us can do is guess what will work best for you and your conditions.

Taller diameter pans allow you to dig deeper, typically are heavier and simply do a better overall job. But then it depends on just what you are trying to do.

Offset disk sets typically turn the ground better than tandem sets.

I use a D6 cat to pull our 12" offset disk with 22" pans. There are times when it is all it wants. I typically pull our 8' offset disk with 22" pans using a 75hp 12,000lb tractor. If conditions are just right, it won't do it. Now this is just my equipment and my conditions-situation, others pull a 12'-14' disk with 60hp machines. (supposedly) never have seen any pictures of that yet.

My opinion, and just that, an opinion, an 8' set with 20" -24" pans is all your tractor will want. I would not even bother looking at anything bigger, but that might just be me.

Good luck. ;)

You have not read my dissertation--------

Disc Harrows come in even pan diameters, ie: 18" -20"-22" etc. Up to 22" pans are almost always offered only notched, also called scalloped. These cut better, compensating for light weight. (Minor issue: Notched pans deform a little easier, wear a little faster.)

The key factor is implement weight bearing on each pan, with forty pounds per pan being minimum effective weight in sandy soils, really for field use rather than food plot use.

For food plots you need fifty to sixty pounds bearing on each pan, because the ground has not previously been broken with a plow, usually, therefore you cannot adjust the gang angles as aggressively and because usually you want to complete soil prep in one pass because of a lack of maneuver room or because of operating on slopes, where you do not want a second pass over disturbed ground.

You get more weight per pan with larger diameter pans (Pi = 3.14), which are also thicker, or by spacing pans at 9" rather than 7", which yields fewer pans per gang. Fewer pans mean less pan "float", better cutting action.

Seven inch and 7-1/2" spaced Disc Harrows are for smoothing furrows created by a moldboard plow in fields. Nine inch pan spacing is for cutting in food plots and fire breaks.

(Monroe Tufline offers heavy Disc Harrows with 9" spacing front, 7" spacing rear, for those who have difficulty with decisions.)

BUY HEAVY.

After seeding the optimum implement to maximize small seed germination and curtail erosion is a Cultipacker.

There are NO TILL Food Plot mixtures based on clover. Being low, less yield than general food plot mixes. I do not have experience in NO TILL category.

Who knew there was so much to know and learn about a disk? I sure didn't. Oh well I learn new things every day. Maybe some day I will know it all.:D But I am starting to get a little worried that I might not have enough time. Oh well carry on, we can all stand some more learning!
