Ready to start seriously looking for a PTO pump for the FEL on my MF-65. I'll also be replacing the valves (due to a small crack) and adding QDs. So the question is how many GPM do I want? Tractor has 40+ HP at the PTO and is diesel.

4-3/4 gpm and 2500psi is almost respectable. Have you tried the loader supplied from the tractor's factory pump? Is the factory pump up to spec or does it require a rebuild ?

What size cyls are on the loader? I would guess 8 to 10 gpm. Is the tractor pump front mount? What are you going to use for a tank and where to mount it? The loader itself could maybe be used for the tank.It said in tractor data your hyd output is right at 5gpm and that would make the loader a little slow.

The loader is slow with the internal hydraulics. The bucket is pretty big. The tractor hydraulics are adequate for the three point hitch but I won't be doing anything fast with the loader. My guess is the internal pump could probably use an overhaul, but that only gets me 5 GPM and then the diverter valve will need to be overhauled/replaced too. Its just as old. A 20 gpm PTO pump is the same cost a a 11.5. So besides a bigger tank and fittings to handle max flow, is there an advantage to go that big? Ill be using the bucket/blade for snow removal this winter and some rock moving this fall and spring.

the fords of that vintage that used crankshaft driven pumps varied between around 10 to 19 gallons per minute - I have seen a similar ford to mine with the FEL and 3 point run by the 5 GPM piston pump and the FEL response was painfully slow...

think my ford 3000 is around 15 gpm?

It has much faster FEL hydraulics than my rhino which has around 8 GPM.

The Ford sometimes has almost to fast loader reaction especially if the engine is running PTO speed and the lower or dump function is used without (finesse)... think 10-15 GPM should give a responsive FEL.

Another concern that may need to be considered is when it is really cold the ford Has noisier hydraulics until warmed up-

thinking the higher volume in two similar open systems may cause more cold cavitation noise with the increase in GPM flow until warm.??.

Seeing that you are going with a PTO pump the same GPM @ PTO speed should probably work

hope this is helpful

The crank pump is much preferable than tying up the pto with a pump. There is no reason what the factory hydraulic oil system can not be used as an oil reservoir.

My 59 MF65 has an issue with steering interference with a crank mounted pump. As I will most likely not be using the bucket while needing the PTO the PTO mount seems the easier route. Not sure my hydraulic sump will hold enough for an 11 GPM pump. I'll have to look that up. It would save adding the reservoir.

Interesting question about the sump capacity- my Rhino 55 hp tractor is loosely based on a conglomeration of Massey Ferguson tractors and uses the sump for the 3 point piston pump and for the FEL and power beyond gear pump.
I have considered changing out the existing pump to a pump that is around 11 gpm thinking the sump is around 9 gallons and serves transmission transfer box and rear axle assembly, if the MF65 is similar it would seem logical that there would be enough volume available..?..

According to Tractor Data and my owners manual My 65 has an 8 gal hydraulic capacity. I read elsewhere on this site that the "rule of thumb " was a reservoir equal to the GPM of the pump.

That was 8 total 3 is being used for steering.
