I've pretty much decided on the brand I want, but i need advice on the size. The pto specs. claims 23 hp at the pto. Is there that much difference between standard and medium in 5 ft? Would the pto run a standard 6 ft. Cutter? Mostly will be cutting grass but will get into some brush once in a while.
Buying tomorrow so any help I would be grateful.

There can be substantial differences in the weights of light-, medium-, and heavy-duty cutters offered by the various manufacturers. Those manufacturers list the recommended minimum (and maximum) HP requirements for their cutters.

What brands are you considering?

Pretty much considering the kodiak Only. Miranda dealer thinks the standard 6ft would be fine but the kodiak website shows it being too much for my 3016
I was leaning towards the 5ft medium cutter

You might get away with a 6 foot, but you would be really pushing it. Thick grass will cause a cutter to struggle as much if not more than anything else.

Mine has supposedly 16.5 hp at the PTO (manual transmission) and 4 foot brush hog is a perfect fit

I wanted to take time to say thanks for the good info. I did purchase the Kodiak 5ft Medium duty rotary cutter. Took it out Monday and jumped right in to some 4 foot tall grass. 2nd gear in high range is was cutting pretty good. I back it down to 1st gear / high range to get the finish I really wanted. So far i'm a very happy camper with the 23 HP PTO and the 5ft Med duty.

wise choice on 5'. just to add, the condition of the brush hog knives is equally important. do you have an easy way (ie impact wrench, etc) to service/sharpen them? makes a world of difference. my advice is not to get impatient mowing tall growth....mowed some heavy growth today just in 4-6th gear low range (12 sp trannie) w/8' hog (75 pto hp). just don't get in a hurry...sounds like a nice equip match.
