What size tiller?

The reason for these posts to have two slightly different titles is because I merged the two threads into one.

Guys, I've been a long time lurker on this page, came here to decide on what compact tractor to buy. I ended up getting a Mahindra 2615 gear drive. Got to say I love it so far and has done everything I've asked it to do. I'm wanting to do some foot plot work and a big garden. I have decided on buying a King Kutter II rototiller. I am just curious if anyone out there is using a 5 footer with this particular tractor. I don't want to buy that one and then not be able to operate it. Should I go with the 4 footer instead, I would like to be able to cover the tracks of the tractor, it is 55" wide. Thanks for any input. Mike

Five ft should be OK. I operated a 4-ft Yanmar RS-1200 tiller with my Kubota B7510HST (17 hp pto) with no problem and your 2615 has more pto hp.

I have a Mahindra 5525 (54 hp engine, 45 hp pto, gear tranny). One problem with it is that in low range/1st gear with the engine at pto speed, the tractor ground speed is 1.7 mph, which is too fast for rototilling. You want the ground speed below 1 mph to rototill your garden, which is easy to do with an HST tractor like my Kubota. You'll have to reduce the engine rpm when you rototill, which normally isn't a big problem since you don't necessarily want the tiller spinning much above 200 rpm anyway. I'd check the specs on that KK tiller before buying it to be sure it will work effectively with your gear tranny tractor.
