I need some opinions on the size trailer to pull behind my Trans Mule. Most of what it will be used for is to haul produce from the garden that is 4-500 yards away. Will be used to haul pumpkin in the fall and other times just general hauling.

I have looked at 5x8, 4x7, 6x10-12, and 5x10-12. I am leaning towards 5x10 but also would like to use the trailer to haul the mule instead of my 20 footer. So I guess I need to measure the Trans to see if 10' will work.

Would also pull the trailer behind the tractor at times but 80% of the time it would be pulled behind the Trans. My roads to the planted bottom are wide enough to handle a 7' rake pulled behind the tractor with several feet of clearance on each side. Some are old skidder trails. I do have one sharpe turn, almost a U turn that I may cause some issue. I had two U turns but was able to cut a new access to that part of the trail/road last week. This last U turn will not be as easy. I can if needed travel the highway to another entrance and avoid this U turn.

So my question; even though I have had the Trans for a year I am still unsure of it pulling ability and many of you have more experience towing with your UTV's. So given the info above what size do you recommend?

Thanks
David

i would say the 5x10 would be a good choice too. i have a 16' double axle that i pull behind my hpx but i mainly use my buddies 5x10 to do most of my light/medium work now if i have to really make a large load then i use the big trailer but i do notice it bends my hitch to much when i load it down so i try to stick with the smaller one.

I agree 100% with Tommy,
I have a choice of many trailers, and have use them all behind our RTV, but the one that serves us best, and is easier to handle all around, is the 5x10 .....

besides with the 5x10 you know you can load the bed of the mule or gator to the max and still max out the trailer too and still pull it with ease . one other thing i like about the 5x10 is it's perfect for transporting the utv's to and from sights and when you get to the worksite you can unhook and then hook up the trailer to the utv and throw all the stuff out the bed of the truck into it and off you go to the worksite. and to make it even more lighter i would yank that metal ramp gate off the rear of the trailer and get you some heavy duty aluminum ramps to load the utv make you a slot to slide a 2x12 board in the rear to make a back for the trailer cust for safety . alot of people overlook them rear ramps but hey they can weigh up to 400lbs and if your trailer has a cargo weight of 1500lbs and you take that gate off you can increase it up to almost 2000lbs.

Hey David, I regularly pull a small trailer with 65 gallons of water (580 lbs) from the well to the goat sheds. I also tow a 5X8 with a Hobart 10K welder generator (476 lbs) and gear in the bed. No problem.

I have started looking for a 5x10. I don't want to buy new since there are a lot of used ones for sale. I'm in no big hurry but would like to have one by mid to late summer.

My biggest concern is pulling the loaded trailer up the steep driveway. I'll know the mule will pull it just kinda wondering how easy or hard on the mule it will be...but I can adjust the load accordingly.

Have you thought of Safety !!!!!
The biggest concern should pulling the loaded trailer DOWN the steep driveway. Even if the Mule does get it up the hill, but struggles, you can bet **** sure that the loaded trailer is going to push the Mule down the hill. My guess is there's a strong likelihood that it could loose control and either jackknife or crash.

This is for any size trailer that doesn't have its own brakes.

Just thought I'd make this statement ~~~~~

And that is a good statement.

However in my situation the heavy load will always be going up hill. About the most weight I would have going down the hill would be 4-500 lb of fertilizer on the mule. Any heavier loads will use the tractor or truck.

I'll go along with the rest of the gang and say 5X10. I made this one like a small hay rack. It has a 2000 LB. gear under it and the gator pulls it just fine.
