On the JD 4020 (sixty's vintage) for exampe, where you pulled the console shift lever from Park down, then moved it right into one of several ranges, then into one of 3 positions for F/R.

These units had 8 F and 3 or 4 R. All shifting was accomplished by this lever. Clutch was required for all shift changes. I think it might have been synchroed within each range.

What was this called please?

THANKS.

The 4020 had either a Syncro Range transmission with 8F and 2R or a Power Shift transmission with 8F and 4R.

Sycro-Range if you needed to clutch for shifts.

Powershift if you DIDN'T need to clutch.

THANKS.

I saw an ad for a JD 1020 "Collar Shift" with 8F/4R. To my knowledge, I've never driven that type of JD transmission.

Any clues how it's different. Better than synchro? Worse? Is it good for loader operations?

Collar shift is not a syncronized gear. It is easier then the gear shifts of totally non snycro but not by much and it is no means a shuttle style with in-line equal speed gears.

It wasn't to many years ago one of the imports was boasting of a shuttle that was actually a three range with reverse and first in line!

I think even back in the early "20" series, they had a reverser. The manual for our old 2030 showed a high/low or a shuttle option.

The industrial version of the 1020's were 8F/4R also or had the reverser.

For those that are not familear, there two gear levers. One selects the range (left when seated) and the other is the 'gear' (right when seated). Both are H patters. Range I and Reverse are inline (toward the right side of the H) and all you have to do is come to a stop. Reverse is a tad bit faster then it's Forward counter part. To get 4-8, you switch the Range lever to II (which is on the lower left- older Deeres had the Park on the upper left).

I have a 2240 Deere that has a rear mounted hydraulic forklift. I keep it in 3rd and switch between Reverse and Forward Range I constantly. Once you get use to it, it can be as fast as a sycro trany or one w/ a shuttle.

They used that tranny all the way up until the 55 series (2355N's etc). I'm sure the new 5000 series is a similar tranny (still two gear levers).

(Oppps...an old thread.... didn't catch the date).

How do you like that 2240? My stepfather has one and I've logged quite a few hours on it.. and in it ( pto repairs )..

Haven't been back for a bit, been busy. Getting the grape harvester ready (nothing like last year)- changing bad bearings on the conveyors and rewiring the lights (circuit breaker and relays instead of all the power going through the switches....)

We like that 2240. It's the later model, when parts were made in France and Germany. Model tag actually says 2240N (though the sticker badging says 2240). Has the parking brake on the side instead on the gear range lever. So far everything works on it. But it's been a forklift tractor all it's life. The factory PTO 'cap' is till on it (don't think it got anything hooked up to the PTO). We had a late 70's 2640 that was being 'waisted' as the forklift tractor.... so we bought the 2240 back then (new) to put the forklift on. Its fairly common around here to use 2040's and 2240s for front or rear folk lifts. It's logged a lot of hours. I think it's a 1982 or 83 model. It's about 4500 hours and all of it is as a fork lift. Maybe it had 10 hours pulling a tool bar or disc before being 'condemned' to a forklift.

So far (fingers crossed), no major repairs. Three starters, maybe 4 sets of batteries, one alternator, two water pumps. Back tires are still factory (but getting weather checked). Refit it w/ an 'intake' heater from a 2255 series and also put a coolant heater. Damned thing hates the cold (ever since it was new).

Ours has had it's share of batteries, an alternator, water pump, and a pto rebuild twice due to employees not setting up a drive shaft correctly and pushing the stub in.. other time was an eat up seal from grass and wire winding around it.. again.. employee's using it like it was 'rented' equipment.. etc.

Replaced the steering draglink too.. that was fun.. 3 different listed for the tractor.. all special order, and no matter how we described it to the aprts man.. it took him all 3 tries to get us the right one.

We were just about ready to put a new tie rod end on and weld up the old tube and use it.. good thing there were only 3 possibilities available.. had there been any more.. we'd have fixed ours and just told the green dealer they might need new counter help.. ( ok.. well.. we told him that anyway.. )
