a neighbor has asked me to fabricate a cattle cute for him just like the one i recently made for myself. I agreed to do it for him and i will be using my own tools in my shop, my only question is how much do i charge him per hour for fabrication and welding?

Depends a lot on what part of the country you are in, which you don't bother to provide. "Here" professsional fabricators and welders get $50-$75 per hour. If you are talented enough to have built something that someone else thinks enough of to want one, you are a professional.

Since its a neighbor and probably a friend I would just shoot him a price and tell him that is what it cost to build. Just figure in your time and materials. I do not like to get into hourly rates for friends because what if you have a issue and it takes longer? Not loosing a friendship over a few hours of labor and a few $$$. Sometimes it works in your favor and sometimes it does not but I have found its the best way to handle it.

Is it possible you may need a favor from your neighbor in the future? How long will it take you to make the chute? Sometimes a day's worth of work is worth doing for free 'cause the favor can be repaid 10 fold. Notice I wrote "sometimes". Some people you can do a favor for them and they act like you owe them for doing them that favor

Personally I don"t think it matters what other welders get in this situation. As others have said, since it is a neighbor it will pay to be "real" reasonable. I have one neighbor that is basically a transplanted "city slicker", but he is a good guy and always asks for opinions like fencing and regular farm stuff, he also allowed me to have the elec co. clear a right of way for my property. He wants a 3 car carport so i will do it for free, he will supply the help and materials. On the other hand, my other neighbor is a "drug store" cowboy, has ruined his land and just annoys everyone around him, the only help he would get from me is directions on where to move..
Only you know the relationship you have with this guy and what kind of future relationship you want, so go with your gut and live with the decision..

Wow, diamond said it the best. I also often do work for freinds and not so close freinds. I always give em a price I think is worth the for the time. It's usually much lower then professionals, and when I do the work, more then half of the time I keep getting bonuses added to the price I asked for. I guess they felt it was worth it, but I enjoy doing these things and teaching them a few things as well.

I have done several things from welding to "custom woodwork" infact i just got back from a 2 week stay in tuson as. all i asked from them was the price of ticket an my food. we used all his tools an it was a great stay. rember if you get paid youll never again ask him to help kift or move anything withought paying him,,i would let him pay for all welding, grinding materals. an ask for a good meal. the rewards look at you every day in the mirror. just my thoughts.
