- International 1066 Full sized JCB Loader/Backhoe and a John Deere 430 to mow with
My wifes cousin next door, has an International 444. It's old as the hills but, works and gets done what we need for it to get done.
New event: His daughter & son in law have just moved into the 3rd house on the farm (my wife's deceased fathers house and his uncle's house)
So, the son in law was cutting a field the other day. Field was maybe 3-4 feet tall. He has zero experience with diesels and his father in law didn't give him any guidance.
He must have been in 4th gear as it was just billowing black smoke. Later, when he came by, I told him he was probably in too high gear, lugging machine....and using 1st gear would probably get better results.
Later, he's out cutting again and the machine sounds.....well...."rough".
Since it has "issues", I presumed they cracked on/two injectors to bleed air from the pump. I got my wrench and went over each of them, they were all snug.
It was ALSO clouding with blue smoke. This is something this machine has never done (I've been around it for 25 years) It happened "this day" as best I know.
My wifes cousin got the son in law off the machine and it's parked at his house....close to the garage (I'm thinking the current word is "son in law, don't use it until we talk further"
This blue smoke and running rough has me intrigued.
He said he's going to simply flush/renew all fluids (oil, coolant) and check the oil bath air filter (odds are there is no oil in it)
There MIGHT have been a slight ticking however, I might be getting that misconstrued with the rough running.
I was busy fixing the radiator, hydraulic cooler in my backhoe to pay too much attention to what was going on so that's about all I know.
I'm guessing it's burning some oil. Without knowing the water level, I'm also wondering if some water got in through the breather hole on top (there is no cap for it while running, a cup is placed over it when not running BUT, I can't swear that it's always covered, like when it might rain)
Fortunately, this is his baby and not mine....but of the three houses, I do happen to be the mechanically inclined person so will likely be part of the process.
Where would you look first?
