I've got about 10-15 gallons of bad gasoline in various small cans that I've collected over the years and now I'd like to get rid of it.

However, it's not a good time burn, and when I've tried to burn it in past, it ended up smelling like gas for months.

I thought about adding it to woodchips and sawdust in a standard 32 gallon garbage can to let it absorb and then burn it in 3 or 4 months.

Or is there a certain type of business that will take it? (like they do motor oil recycling?)

Or is there something or some process that will break it down into it its basic atomic building blocks?

Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

Thanks Paul,

I should have first gone looking at recyclers. As I started following the links and doing more searches, I found that gasoline disposal is categoried as hazardous waste. Fortunatly, another place has a list of where to get rid of it.

Metro: Guide to hazardous waste

However, I'm still open to ideas on taking care of it at home.

How bad is bad? You could mix some with fresh gas and use it. Years ago when I worked at a International truck dealer I got gas and diesel fuel that had been mixed together all the time. They didn't want it since they had to pay to dispose of it as mixed hazardous waste and I was more than happy to take it for free. I would fill up my old rust bucket 1977 Ford P/U and add 2 or 3 gallons of the "dieselene" to it. Over the years I must have run 500+ gallons through the truck with no ill effects.

Here's another thought. Ask your local fire department if they want it. They might use it for firefighter training. Never hurts to ask.

I have this link on my website homepage. It's a great resource for finding recyclers in your area for almost everything. Earth 911 » Making Every Day Earth Day, Reduce, Reuse & Recycle, Green Lifestyle

Does your county collect gas, paint and other materials?

My county takes these kinds of materials once a month, no charge. You should have seen their faces when I showed up with half a pickup full of old oil, gas, paint, pesicides, anti freeze, and plant killer. :D

They also take batteries and I think old tires. This is one of those things are county does right. Otherwise people would just dump this stuff along the roads.

Later,
Dan

Theres energy there that you could have, but if you just burn it as waste you lose it. Mix it with some good gas and use it in your lawnmower and other gasoline engines. Just dont store the diluted mix in the fuel system. - Run it out on the task then put a little fresh gas in behind it.

NO!! Unless you are interested in creating a potentially lethal bomb with enough energy to send your house to a recycler.

Hi Steve

Had a DEP man tell me it was illegal to bury paint cans with paint in them. It couldn't even be dumped into the trash for garbage truck. However, take the top off the paint can and let it evaporate, then toss it or bury it. It's OK.

You could put it in an open container ( in a safe spot) and let it evaporate. If it were me, I really like the suggestion posted here of mixing with fresh gas. Only if the gas wasn't dirty or rusty; just not fresh gas. That's probably what I would do.

Cheers....Coffeeman
