Buying Advice What to look for in a used tractor?

I have never owned a tractor and after having recently purchased 10 acres that I plan to build on and pasture our gaited horses, I'm in the market for a small utility tractor, in the 33-40 HP range. Been looking at new and used. Came across a used Kubota L3540 for sale near me: 400 hours, front end loader, HST, quick attach bucket. Owner is asking $23,500. He said that he's looking to downsize.

When I go look at the tractor, what should I be looking for?

I like to take used cars to a reputable mechanic to look it over for me - will a Kubota dealer do the same?

I believe a good Kubota dealer will do that. I would try to determine
- if the tractor has been stored inside or outside
- any signs of abuse, bent buckets are a give away. Dented hood and fenders too.
- proper upkeep of fluids. Clean oil?
- look to see how he keeps his other equipment up, even cars, lawnmowers, etc.
- look for leakage that is not addressed.
- look for a rattle can touch up. The paint will be fresher with overspray
- look at the exhaust, should be almost clear after warmup.
- walk away from any DIY major mechanical work unless he is a good mechanic

I seriously doubt any dealer is going to send a mechanic out to look at your used tractor. You may be able to pay one on the side for the service though.
In addition to what has been mentioned, my list would include:
Evidence of regular greasing
Check all fluids, belts, hoses
Operate machine in all gears / ranges
Operate 3pt, and all fel functions
Get it up to temp
Generally clean machines are a plus in my book as well, but many folks don’t keep tractors clean.
