What to use for a grill grate?

I'm still forming ideas for the grill I want to make. what are you guys using for a grate to put the meat on? I have a piece of expanded metal, but it isn't the flat kind, which would make it hard to clean.

After finding a 20lb tank, I have decided that it's a bit too small, even for just my wife and I. I'm looking for a 40lb tank. A piece of square pipe about 24" long and 12" in diameter would be ideal.

That floor grating is good for what you need. I would splurge and get the stainless steel version. I liked the one shaped like little I-beam. I never saw anything like that, usually it is just the welded flat bar type.

If you want a really nice grill try a restaurant supply. Restaurant stoves use cast iron and they are heavy. They come in pieces that fit together to make the grill so they don't weigh 200 pounds. You want a heavy grill so that when you throw the steak on it sears it without going cold like a thin grill does. Nothing you see in a barbeque store is anything like the real thing, especially those ones with the porcelain on them.

Re-bar makes a good grill. 3/8" is a good size. Have made them for grills, smokers and wood stoves. Cheep & easy.

I was thinking of using 1/4 or 3/8" square bar for my next grill.

That's what I was thinking about, but stainless. Square would be easier to weld together than round stock. Don't want to get too deep in the wallet though, so it's probably not gonna happen.
