Looking to get a trailer for my New Holland 4020. Tractor weight is around 6300 lbs and would be hauling with the bush hog attached. So additional weight and length. Hauling rig is a 2001 F-350 DRW with the 7.3. Could go with either a BP or gooseneck. Anyone have any recommendations?

Bumper pulls track better in tight low speed turns. It needs to be long enough to pull forward far enough to get positive tongue weight to offset the bush hog rear of the axles.

My brother in law has a heavy backhoe trailer but with the 265 MF and a heavy bush hog I could not get it forward enough to get any tongue weight.

Your tow vehicle is an over kill (good thing) so I would get a trailer that would more match its ability to tow it to a point. Big trailers can carry small loads but small trailers can not carry big loads. :)

Get them to let you take the trailer home and load it before you buy it. One MUST feel safe in order to be safe. The incline is critical as is the trailer staying level when loading. A dancing trailer is hard to hit. :(

Very good advise give. Do you see yourself changing trucks or tractors in the future? A BP is very flexible. You can tow it with a SUV or Van while a GN you are stuck with a 3/4 ton truck or more. Also many guys buy just enough trailer then get a new larger tractor in a few years and now they have to get a bigger trailer.

I personally like BP because I like the bed of my truck.

I pulled a BP trailer for years and liked it just fine. Then I moved up to a gooseneck and wished I had sooner. But Chris makes an excellent point. If your truck is in the shop or something, you can't just go borrow a buddy's truck unless he has a GN hitch. I know lots of people with pick-ups I can borrow, but very few with GN hitches. With that much weight you are still stuck with a 3/4 ton truck or larger, by the time you add the trailer weight and mower, you are probably 9500# or better. I like the way a BP tracks behind the truck but you can't turn one around on a city street like I can with my GN.

I did the opposite. I had a GN, 25' 25,000# that weighed 6,000# empty. I sold it and bought a 18' car hauler 7K that is only about 1,500# empty. It fits my needs much better.

perhaps a 20' bumper pull with tandem 7k axles.. that or a 20+5 GN

I have a TN55S, which I think is a similar tractor (I didn't say the same:D), with a loader. I (barely) am able to move it on a 10,000 #, 16ft flatbed bumper pull. I selected a bumper pull for the reasons others have stated -- it fits anything with a good bumper hitch. And I can still use the bed while using the trailer. I didn't have this tractor then.

My next trailer will likely be a deck over (most GN are this way) bumper pull in the 22~24 foot range. My guess in the 12~14,000 # weight rating. Remember that the ratings include the total weight (trailer and load). The deck over bed will also be convenient in using it for other loads, though with the higher deck height, almost requires a tractor or fork lift to load/unload.

This may sound like a strange thing to do, but on my trailer I keep a short log to stand under the trailer end when loading my tractor (what a surprise when the truck took off when I was loading the tractor --- and the tractor brakes had absolutely no affect). The trailer tongue lifted the trucks rear wheels off of the ground. Some trailers have a leg for this, some ramps (the flip down with legs) perform a similar function. That brings up a point -- you need ramps that will work for your loads (length and method of deploying them) or you will always fight them. Some like slide outs, some like flip downs, some prefer dove tails (less ramp length and weight for the ramps), some like the flip up dovetail (flat bed when up),

Proper load tie downs too. Not sure if that is a moving target (law wise) or not. Plenty of posts going on ad nauseum on this issue alone.

I moved from a bumper pull to a gooseneck because I already have a 4 horse gooseneck trailer. Towing with the gooseneck is much preferred all around. Going from Michigan to Kentucky with a fully loaded trailer (Kioti DK45 with FEL, two Quads, and disk or bush hog would be a chore with a bumper pull. If you are going to get a bumper pull make sure all available anti-sway tactics are in place. I cannot see going to a bumper pull unless my trips shorten up considerably. I f you order a new GN trailer also highly recommend getting 6" extension (height) to give plenty of clearance to the taller 4 X 4 trucks these days.
