Putting together a home made Log splitter and was wondering what type of fluid I should use. It will be using a Barns 11 gal/min 2 stage pump. Can I get by with simple ATF fluid for this application? any recomendations would be helpfull. FYI, the pump did not come with any recomendations.

Thanks Phil

If you push these 11gpm through 1/4" hoses all day, your system will require high viscosity due to over heating...

What I try to say is that you need to provide more info about any "extreme" operating or design conditions....max and min ambient temperature and frequency of cycling, size of reservoir for cooling etc, ....

but for any normal operation between ambient 10F to 70F a 32 grade hydraulic fluid will be just fine, if you can stay below 140F in fluid temp

tsc has accell brand 303 fluid for 24$ for 5g .. way cheaper than plain aw32 fliid.. even though it's a marginal utf fluid.. it should make for a good hydro fluid in a closed system. heck.. it's even red like atf too :)

where can you buy that oil, and get FULL specs provided???

tsc has the oil.

the only spec sheet I can find is from the distribuitor.. warren oil.. and other than specs like pour point and viscosity, and claims for ep and anti wear, and wet brakes and multi purpose oil.. it actually doesn't list any specs.. like the ford M2C134D.. etc.

pail claims to meet most older tractor specs.. but not all newer tractor specs.. says on the pail it should be fine for a general purpose hyd oil though.. heck.. at 20-24$ per 5g pail.. i'll vever buy aw32 again.. I prefer utf oils anyway..

here's a link to the sparse pdf.

Why not keep it simple... it's only a wood splitter, nothing very complicated ... in all the units we've built we pour in 5-30 motor oil. That way you only need one oil for the engine and hydraulics .... keep it simple..... Jim

I totally agree about keeping it simple....but I just prefer to know "how simple"....No reason to risk seals, etc because we went too simple....
I think we at least need to know what we are using, so "that over heating" or seal problem, can be tracked to the right cause......

This is a simple unit that I boxed in the I beam to make a Tank and provide cooling
as well. Hoses will be 1/2" off the pump and valve, with 3/4" return line. 4" piston with a 20" throw. Will be running this in the woods of Vermont, spring, summer, fall. Ambient temps can range from in the 80's to 30 for my working habits. We do have a TSC near by that I can check out what they might have on sale for fluid. I just didn't want to make a critical mistake and feed it something that might cause it to fail for what ever reason.

thanks, Phil

good plan...That Accel fluid had a very low VI, Viscosity Index, 100+ is recommended for hydraulics in a wider range of ambient temperature, and also you never now about how the additives will do with the seals......
