What type of barn siding to use???

I'm just finishing a barn/garage with a shop at one end. It is sheathed with OSB and wrapped with Typar. I'm familiar with most siding material, but I just want to know if there's anything new out there. We want the barn look, so we want to avoid vinyl, cement board.. Currently I guess our options are T-111 and board + baton, both stained barn red. Is there anything else??

You could also use ship lap, just boards, 1/2 round wood siding, tongue and groove "log siding", chinked slabs, red metal, cedar shakes and fake cedar shakes,

hardy & certainteed both make fiber cement panels that look a lot like T-111 for not much more in cost. Once it's nailed up and painted barn red, you won't see much difference but you'll have the fire resistance.

a picture is worth a thousand words...so here is about 5 thousand words worth...

the last picture shows my 16 foot aluminum boat...it is a puddle under the trailer and the 40 hp motor melted in half it is shown in the second to the last picture. The lower unit is to the right and the power head is on the left

If you have animals in contact with it give that some consideration, I sided mine with vinyle to match the house and my animals have removed about half of it for me, I am going to re-side it with vertical ship lap.

No I wish I did so I could do something to avoid it the next time. We had gone to town (26 miles away) to get a part to repair the water heater in our camper. When we got back 2 or three hours later the firemen were just rolling up the hoses. Some people stopped by and pushed out a couple of my dirt bikes and a large generator and my wifes snowmobile. They saved about 10k worth of stuff. I sure am gratefull that they did that. I did loose a 45 years worth of tools though.
