Rookie at this so bear with me. I've got a JD 655 diesel. What type of engine oil and front axle gear lub, ect. should I use? I've got at TSC any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.:

If its MFWD lube you're talking about, it'll probably want 85-140w gear oil.

For the engine, your manual probably says that 5w30 is okay. That's what I use in the Yanmar engine of my 4010. Gets pretty hot in Virginia: Mobil 1 5w30.

Thanks Ralph, Is there a special blend for diesel, marked on the jug or just there regular 5w-30?

You'll want an oil type that has a CI rating. CI stands for Compression Ignition. SI stands for Spark Ignition. Some types of oils are both. The rating will be on the bottle.

If it's a Yanmar diesel engine, it should LOVE Shell Rotella "T" synthetic 5w-40. Started using that in my 955 (and all my other diesel stuff, too) when I got it about 5 years ago, based largely on its rave reviews in this forum, and it's a happy tractor. Turns out a bunch of motorcycle guys love it, too, but that's another matter.

Last I checked, you could still get it in the preferred (this should cause some discussion :D) CI-4+ rating at Wally's for around $16/gal.

Ralph - The 5-30 M1 stuff I have here is rated SM/CF, and has the dreaded "Energy Conserving" thingy on the donut. It doesn't say "Meets JD specs" anywhere on it. Not arguing with you about your choice of lubes, I'd just hate to see a fellow JD guy possibly have a problem. :(

Just did that. I got the Rotella"T" synthetic 5w-40 from Wally World, the 3520 seem's quite happy with it. I am hoping that in the long run the synthetic oil is better(?) for the turbocharger.

Actually the first letter stands for the performance level with C = Commercial and S = Service. The second letter is the rating. CJ-4 being the most current Commercial and SM the most current Service oil. Here's a link to the API category's and rating levels.
