Hey everyone. I just moved into the family farm house last year and working on improvements and changes. Newest one to tackle is the old celler/basement. Its dirt floor and I want to put a couple inches of rock down there to give a cleaner nicer walking surface. What type of rock would work best? I want something that will pack really tight and not shift a lot when walked on.
Thanks in advance for the help.

<3/4" aggregate with lime mortar and water mixed in, pour the floor and be done with it. :)
If that's not an option, look for crushed rock versus screened, crushed will have sharper edges and be less likely to roll under your feet. You should be able to get the local concrete yard to chute it right in for you with a mixer.

I'm trying to decide to pour the floor or rock it. I don't want to invest a ton into this part of the house planning to level it in 10 years so I wanted to make it a little nicer for the short term. Also I have about 3inches I can play with and anymore I would have to start digging and with the big fieldrock walls I don't really want to dig down. Cement floor min is 4 inches right?

Considering you are going to demo the place in time, put down a 6mil poly barrier then 3/4" minus crushed stone with dust. That should lock in fairly well, obviously not a immovable as concrete, certainly less expensive. The poly will create a vapor barrier and help keep down the moisture. Good Luck.

Ditto ... and since you won't have your tractor down there to help spread it, 3/4 minus is a lot easier to shovel than crushed rock of any size.
