Bought a used rotary mower that has this PTO shaft attached to it, I've never seen an end like this and thought maybe someone else knows how it is supposed to work. The collar didn't move, it hasn't been used in a few years.

Looks like a euro style triangular shaft.

I'm guessing the collar releases some balls when pulled back.

The collar is rusted up. Clean it out and grease it. It slides back releasing the locking ball on the inside. You then slide it over the shaft and push the collar forward to lock it on the shaft.

Mix up some transmission fluid and kerosene (50/50) into a bucket and soak that end of the PTO shaft in it for a few days. Take it out and tap it lightly with a hammer and see if it will free up. If not, soak it and repeat till it loosens up.

Re: What type PTO shaft is this ? Update: twist release coupler

Thanks for the tips, guys.
After a day and a half of soaking it, beating on it, trying to compress the collar with channel lock. I figured it was toast anyway and knew if I took it apart it probably would never work correctly again but it wasn't any good like it was, so I took off the ring clip figuring, WTF, noting lost and after pry ing and working the cap off it was very clear why it wouldn't budge, being completely full of dirt.
Cleaning and oiling it a bit, it is a very simple release mechanism, when you twist the cap it pushes down the release button on the coupler. I should have taken a picture of how much dirt was compacted in there but didn't think of it until I was ready to reassemble it.
Thought maybe I'd post the update so if someone else like me runs across a PTO shaft like this they'll see the collar twists to release it from the PTO and how simple it is if it isn't working and needs repair, though I bet there's not a lot out there like this.
