I plan on putting grab hooks on my front end loader and would like to ask,
what is a good length for my chains. Someone gave me 100 feet of chain so I can make them any length. I plan on using it for the basic pulling and lifting. I've got a JD 2520.

Welcome to TBN!

If you do a search you will find a lot 'and I mean A LOT' of information on FEL hooks!! First thing, is make sure the chain is load rated for the application you will be using it for!

I'd keep the 100 ft chain as is and add hooks, at get a 10-20 ft old transport chain. You can't cut it longer. Its nice to have a long one for pulling stuff out / down / chaining stuff down etc.

I would cut 2-4 pieces about 6-7' each. I have 2@5' and 2@6' lengths like that with a grab hook on one end and a large slip hook on the other. I have yet to find something I need longer chain for when lifting with the FEL. If anything I never used my other longer ones that range from 12' to 30' in length. I have a pair of 14' chains with grab hooks on the ends but I hate to use it for lifting as there is so much access length.

I have several chains of different lengths but the length I use most is 8'.

100 feet of chain is a lot of weight to move around (I'm talking about when you need to load and unload it from your bucket or where ever you decide to carry it).

I have two lengths:
One is 20' length which is quite versatile but sometimes I wish it was a bit longer.
One is 6-7 feet in length and is great for holding something in the bucket for transport (couple of trash cans or 55 gallon drums, for example).

So, I suggest you cut that 100 footer to a 25', a 6-10', and leave the rest intact for when you do need a long chain.

BTW, Glen Watkins brought up a very good point about the grade.

I have two 8 or 10' ones that I use most often, they have grab hooks on both ends. I also have one 20' that I use to pull things from the rear with, it has one grab hook and one larger slip hook on it. They are all 5/16" GR70.

Don't be afraid to cut that 100' into useable lengths. Nothing stops you from hooking chains together and wrapping the hooks with electrical tape for the once-every-three-years occaision when you need a LOOOONG chain.
