What\'s in your toolbox?

I'm a newbie. I have a Rural King 404 tractor that only has about 12 hours on it so far. I have a brush hog and plan to get some additional implements (box blade, disc, and pond scoop--FEL next year). Even with the low number of hours on the tractor, I'm constantly running back and forth getting tools.

I wonder if we could get a discussion of the types of tools one carries with them. I'm curious as to what I should have in my box (I do have a dozen shear bolts in my box now, after busting one already on my cutter).

Thanks.

Re: What\'s in your toolbox?

1 Small ball pien hammer
2 Adjustable (crescent) wrenches, one small, one large
1 Large flat blade screwdriver (used more for a pry bar than its intended purpose)
1 Pair of channel lock pliers
1 Pair of "good" Vise-Grip pliers
1 Pair of electrician's pliers or slip-joint pliers.
Cat 1&2 toplink pins
Extra lynch pins, hitch pin, cotter pins, and, of course, shear bolts.

For any "special" bolts (ie. extra large or extra small) I carry a matching box/open end wrench. Same goes for hex or torx fittings (like the oil drain plug in my NH).
Somewhere my dad found a neat, small, pry bar that he has carried on every tractor he has owned. Used it for everything from pulling fencing stables to helping line up hitch ping holes when attaching implements. If I ever find one like it, it's mine /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: What\'s in your toolbox?

I actually keep mine in a mostly waterproof bag that I roll-up and fits under/behind the seat.
-drywall/roofing hammer--sharpened for chopping "stuff" when bushhogging
-2 sizes of adjustable crescent wrench
-large flat scredriver/pry bar
-slip joint/channellox pliers
-needle nose pliers
-extras of--shear bolts, all pin types, retainers etc.
-bungee cord
--add sunscreen, bug spray in summer

Re: What\'s in your toolbox?

Two crescent wrenches (15 inch and 10 inch), a big pair of channellocks (a 16 inch pair), two 1/2" and 9/16" wrenches, a phillips and flat screwdriver, miscelaneous pins and clips, a pir of slipjoints and in my pant leg pocket I carry a pair of 6" channel lock pliers everyday. I would be lost without those which is why I have a pair in my truck, garage, each toolbox and I carry a pair of them onme, like a wallet I'd be lost without em.

Re: What\'s in your toolbox?

I carry some chain, hammer/axe, channel locks and a 1' piece of 1/2" pipe to turn my top link when needed.

Re: What\'s in your toolbox?

I know what you mean about the channel locks. I have two sets and am always stuffing one pair in my coat or coverall pockets!

Great lists. I never thought of carrying some bungee cords and extra pins with me. I'm sure those will be the next things I throw in. Right now I have:

Misc. sockets
Channel locks
Screwdrivers (Phillips and standard)
Small pliers
Gloves (as a writer I have to protect my hands!)
Dozen shear pins

Re: What\'s in your toolbox?

Since my ontractor tool box is a joke and I trailer to the site each time, I have a 5 gallon tractor bucket for tools. If I need something from the bucket I stop and walk back to the truck.

The bucket has a grease gun, extra lynch pins, one of those little spools actually a bunch of loops of 14 gauge galv wire and a pair of cutters for it, ear muffs, bug spray, a breaker bar and a handful of big sockets over 1", the big honkin crescent and the little 6" crescent wrench, slip joint pliers, and a funnel. In the truck I actually have a gerber multi tool, epi-pen, handgun, bundle of zip-ties, short segments of fuel line, allen wrench cluster tool, first aid stuff, and a cell phone.

Then there's the cooler and jerry cans of diesel since Kioti couldn't put a big enough fuel tank onboard to work for a full day. I also have a chainsaw bucket with its tools and fuels plus gloves and survey tape.

If I had to carry one tool with me all the time it would be a gerber or letherman multi tool. Partly because it goes on your belt and is hard to lose.

Re: What\'s in your toolbox?

Wow, I'm getting some great ideas to put on my list:

Bug spray
Fuel line
Allen wrench cluster
Handgun (I guess for the coyotes around here)

Please keep the lists coming. This kind of stuff fascinates me. It's very interesting AND helpful to us novices. If you ever read Golf Digest, they do the same thing with pro golfers--ask them what they carry in their golf bags during a tournament.

Thank you.

-Allen wrenches
-a Punch or set of them
-Pipe wrench
-Several rags or shop towels
-Flashlight

Out of the box:

-Rifle scabbard and favorite rifle

-Shovel

The flashlight and FE ideas are great!

Also, I just flick my cigar ashes on the dirt. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
