I bought one of these from radio shack years ago, and would like to get a few more, it the price is reasonable. It plugs into a cigarette lighter socket, and has banana plugs on the top, but wire can also be inserted into the hollow post, and then thread the red/black nuts down, to hold the connection. I find it to be quite useful when performing a quick check of something that takes 12v, or when checking for power or ground (good safe place to connect test light/meter). My search of cigarette/banana/power/connections/ etc never turned it up. Thanks in advance to all who try to help.

OK. thank you very much. I guess the magic word is binding, instead of banana....

They make cigarette lighters with volt meters built right in. I find it useful on cars or tractors with plugs, just plug right in. They make them with USB and temperature readings and all sorts of stuff too.

The accuracy of those meters is a bit questionable. I have two identical units. One reads the correct voltage but the other one always reads 1 volt low.

volt.jpgThat odd, I have used a couple of them, and they all seem right on within a few tenths I would say. I would not say they are very accurate compared to a high end voltmeter, but to know if you are getting 12.5 volts or 13 volts they are worthwhile. You will definitely see when the alternator kick in and you are getting the 13.8 or 14 volts.

I also add these to my equipment (see below). They seem accurate enough to diagnose battery and charging issues. The only issue I have with them is on my JLG lift, when I throttle up, it blanks out to a reset mode, but not sure if it is the meter, or the voltage regulator not responding fast enough and sending a spike of over voltage. Other than that, never had one go bad, and they seem as accurate as a regular voltmeter. They will definitely tell you the state of charge on the battery before you start it up. Let's me know if my batteries are dying.
