What\'s m\'diesel saying when he covers me w/soot?

Hi gang,

sheesh, i just looked and it's been *months* since i checked in. my bad. it's been a great summer, filled with all sorts of great PT projects. i've got about a million posts to catch up on.

here's the question of the day. last couple of times i've been out on the PT 1850 i've come back covered with soot.

i Googled "diesel" and "soot" and came up with the notion that the air/fuel mixture was off -- too rich, not enough air.

hmm... air cleaner plugged? went and checked. YES!! Wow!! sooper plugged with the dreaded LFS's (little fluffy seeds) and dust. cleaned all that stuff out and did a little mowing this AM.

it SEEMS better, but i may just be kidding myself. can y'all think of other things the Deutz is trying to tell me when he throws off all that soot?

Might take awhile to blow out the soot build-up that you have from the dirty air cleaner.

Is it time to change the filter? Does cleaning it get out everything?

I had the filter in my gasoline powered generator become clogged with oil (IMHO). The filter only had 20 hours on it and the engine would not run with it. I put in a new filter and it worked fine. I think the oil migrated from the oiled prefilter to the paper filter. I now leave the prefilter off unless I am running the engine for many hours. This is not often since I only use it during power outages.

Just curious.
How many hours between your air filter cleaning?

I got 30 hours on my 1850...mostly bush hogging, and as soon as I can, I'm checking mine.

Er... gee Dad... howcum you gotta ask those kinda questions??

I got conflicting opinions about cleaning it out with the air hose. The manual said it was ok, my rural neighbors are saying better to wash it with water and then set it out to dry in the sun. They are worried about tearing it if you hit it too hard with the air.

I had a similar problem on my Kubota, smoked really bad, limiting my rpm's. With no filter, ran great. Put in a new filter, still smoke. After investigating more, I discovered a rats nest down in the intake tube, which is about a foot and a half long before the filter, cutting off most of the air. Cleaned it out, and now works fine.

I blow out my combine filters daily during the 6 weeks harvest lasts, that's two filters per combine x 2 combines, never have had a filter fail due to the air pressure. If you're worried, turn your regulator down to about 45 psi and then your worries will be minimal.

P.S. if it's been 90 hours since cleaning, the dirt might be too embedded to clean by either method.
