What\'s That Smell??
In today's Dallas Morning News (I especially like the opportunity to order at the end):
Don't like eau de farm? Then stay away, si'l vous plait
"In Ottawa County, Mich., city folk are moving out to the country to enjoy what they envision as the charm of life in the sticks. Then they get a whiff of Green Acres and start griping. So, the Grand Haven Tribune reports, the Ottawa County Planning Commission has produced a pamphlet for prospective homeowners aimed at warding off complaints about farmers doing their jobs. Not only does it describe what goes on at a farm, the pamphlet also includes a scratch-and-sniff patch ready to unleash the scent of manure."
""The whole purpose is that people should not move into a rural area unless they are willing to accept and embrace the practices that happen on a farming operation", said Mark Knudson, director of the county's planning and grants department. Fred Walcott, Ottawa County Farm Bureau president, said farmers have a tough enough job without having to endure a rising tide of complaints from newcomers who don't like the smell of country living."
"Mr. Knudson said the county hired a Chattanooga, Tenn. company to print the brochures. "The smell got so bad in their building that they had to evacuate", he said. Area businesses and real estate agents are distributing the pamphlet, but you can order your own by e-mailing plan@co.ottawa.mi.us ."
Is this a great country or what?
