What\'s the best plate compactor?

OK, it is getting to the point where I am considering the purchase of a plate compactor as my schedules don't often match the rental outfits. So far the best deal seems to be at <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/hi/B0000224VW/qid=1023806839/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/104-3221899-3036761>Amazon</A> but before I lay out this much cash I'd like to hear any experiences any of you have had with any type of plate compactor. I anticipate using this for a few years and selling it (of course TBN members may have first dibs) and will be working on the barn, driveway and lots of pavers and walkways around the homestead. I have also looked at Bartell/Terex but the Master unit seems to have better number for less $$$. What say you all?

The one I have is a Stone, manufactured by Stone Conveyor.
Plate compactors, regardless of manufacturers claims, are pretty much created equal. They all travel really well in ONE direction, and make you wonder why you thought it was a good idea to use one in the other direction. I'd really like to have one with a teflon type coating on the plate, but that probably won't happen.
They are also not a complek machine, so they last a very long time. A plate tamper will wear out 3 engines before it goes to the junk yard.
Given your planned use, checking into the auction market might be a better idea than Amazon. You also might check availability of used machines from rental outfits, particularly contractor rental yards.
