I'm looking at a single or two row planter for next spring and thought I'd post now to give my some time to find one. I've heard that the jd 71 is a good one and am also considering cole and coventry. I was very surprised at how much a new cole was as I haven't seen any used one's local.

Any suggestions would be helpful or any other brands or models or if they also do fertilizer. If it's a used one I'm looking for something that won't be difficult to get parts or repair.

Thanks in advance

Regardless the brand be sure you can get parts for a used one before you buy. Cole and Coventry are the same company now. In my part of the world finding a single or two row planter with a good fertilizer box would be hard. Depending on where you live you may find someone who takes old four row units and repairs them and sells them as single or two row equipment. Look at ebay also. Also you may find there are farm equipment auctions in your area. BE CAREFUL at auctions. Know what you are bidding on and have a top price before you start bidding. I would want to see planters before I bought them. kt

If I could find a 4 row I'd be happy with that also, our farm was a hay farm and that stopped when I was 7 yrs old, so I wasn't around it growing up. I just don't want to pickup something that's going to need to be worked on all the time.

My son sells one and two row 71 Flex Planters that he reconditions and mounts on tool bars...he probably has 50+ row units ready to recondition.

You can contact him at matt@valkenburgauction.com

I have a two row JD 71 that is absolutely fool proof. Anybody can use and operate it and does a great job of planting corn. They are in demand but worth the money.

#70 or #71 Deere planter units are the least complicated, most reliable plate-type planters available. NEW #71's are available from YETTER Mfg. They actually built the Deere #71's under contract from Deere Inc. Once Deere discontinued selling them, Yetter bought sales rights and continues to build them to this day.

Deere also made a number of other unit planters throughout the years. #24/#25, #44's, ect, make good single/double row units. Parts are easy to get through Deere. (or Yetter in the case of the #71) #70 Deere FlexPlanters are essentially the same as a #71, only with a more basic chain tensioning system, and slightly different down pressure design. Still a VERY good planter. Deere planters use the "type B" plates. They're without a doubt the easiest to find used and most plentiful on the market.

IH and Allis Chalmers made great unit planters, just not quite as common as Deere's.

The Ford 309 is a good 2-row planter. As is the Massey Ferguson #39.

NEW plates are available through LINCOLN AG.

Cole/Covington units are decent, but dealer support is very regional.

"Best buy", IMHO, would be a toss up. All depends on what sort of deal you can get on an individual unit. "Best planter"? Again, IMHO, the Deere #70/#71 is a tough act to beat.

Good thread, I'm in the market for a two row JD 71 or Yetter. I'm in E. WA. and smaller units are just not available used. I've talk to several row crop farmers in my area and they all use big air planters. I'm still lookin' though. My needs are larger gardens, one half ac. or so of corn. I have four or five to do a year. I stopped by the local JD dealer and the sales person couldn't find (amongst other things) his Yetter catalog. bjr

Im a die hard Covinton man lol. The last planter dad bought about8 years ago was a new covinton from the dealer he got the 3000 from. I liked it better than his Burch and IH he had. Ive used it more than he has. I bougfht some old implemnts at a site that was being leaned up think theres a planter in it. My wifes uncle has a cole Im not familiar with them I know Tuffbilt tractors usedthem in a belly mount configuration. The covington is fairly simple to use and maintain. I was mine and oil it after every use. The only thing I gripe about is some times if you have to stop mid row sometimes the fer tube will plug with clay. I have a pick to punch them out. Sometimes it slips down so it plugs but thats rare. I thought of having a friend make one out of clear plastic to see that. I also like the clicker that shakes the fertilizer hopper is also handy to let you knw the drive is in the ground.

I used a Massey Ferguson #39 last year to plant 11/2 acres of corn-my first attempt at doing this- and it worked really well in a rocky seed bed. Mine has a fertilizer hopper so it applied the fertilizer as I planted.:)

In response to FWJ, I had an Allis Chalmers 330 4 row no-til with the A-C #71 plate units. They were good for corn, but nearly impossible to speed up enough for soybeans or snapbeans. The JD MaxEmerge planter units were a little more involved to work on, but easier to changeover to different crops. Also, parts for the A-C were much more expensive than the JD.
