What\'s The Difference ?

I am shopping for a second hand Bush Hog (not the brand name) but something to knock down 8ft alders. I am only new at this while I await delivery of my new Kioti CK25 I am trying to understand the proper terminology for impliments. I see there is finish mowers - rotary cutters - and bush hogs. I have a 60" finish mower ordered but I am slighty puzzled as to whether or not there is a difference between a bush hog and a rotary cutter. Could someone help me out and explain the mechanics of them and if they are different ? Thanks

Kevin

Re: What\'s The Difference ?

Bush hog is a brand name and they make several types of implements including a brush mower/rotary cutter. Rotary cutters are sometimes called bushhogs, brushhogs and brush mowers. The generally have a couple of blades mounted on a round disk (stump jumper) and sling out away from the disk while cutting but will "give" if they hit something hard. When looking under a brush mower, one can move the blades in and out to see the action. Centrifugal force keeps them out in the cutting mode. A rotary cutter/ brush mower usually rests on the 3 point hitch pins at the front and one large tire on the back. Finish mowers, with two or three blades that don't use centrifugal force, but belts, usually have four wheels to ride evenly on for a finer cut, and are not designed to cut large material such as saplings. The blades could break as they don't have the "give" of a rotary cutter blade. I hope this is a good explanation. John

Re: What\'s The Difference ?

Thanks John that should do it. So, by saying 'Rotary Cutter' or 'Bush Hog' should be basically the same.

Yes, but using Bush Hog could mean a different implement, such as a Bush Hog (brand) finish mower or loader, or backhoe as they also make those. I would say Rotary Mower, or Brush Hog or Brush Mower. That makes it a little clearer to the reader.
Thanks Tough451, I'm glad it wasn't too muddled! John

Also sometimes called a shredder in Texas, and our Australian members say they're called a slasher in their part of the world.

Thanks Bird. I had forgotten that one even though I've seen it here on TBN quite a few times. The Australian one I haven't heard. Makes sense though. John

Re: What\'s The Difference ?

If you look at the Bush Hog site, you will see that one of their products is a Bush Hog rotary cutter (looked at it yesterday so it is their terminology as well).

I think you have it down pretty good already.

Yes, they call it a Bush Hog because it's their brand name. A lot of people call any rotary cutter a Bush Hog even if it's made by another company. Sort of like people calling all refrigerators Frigidaire, all colas Coke etc. John

Re: What\'s The Difference ?

Yes, terms/names are mind confusing.
And, there is another mower/cutter which is usually called "rotary mower" (see attachment)
Actually, this too should be called "rotary cutter".
This is similar to finish mower blade system with a lower RPM speed. In this rotary mower, there is no big centrifugal force like in rotary cutter.
