I can't seem to shift without grinding gears unless I come to a full stop and go to Idle. I can shift progressively (1st, 2nd then 3rd). But anything else seems to grind at least slightly. That can't be good.

Am I missing something, should I go to neutral let out the clutch out then depress it and go into the next gear or something like that? I mostly have problems when going back and forth using the loader... which I use a lot!

You usually pick the gear that you want to used before you start moving. The gears are not normally shifted while moving. There is no need to start in low and shift through the gears like you would in a truck.

Sounds like your box isn't a syncro? But as said you don't normally change gears once moving pick the gear and go, the exception to that is road speeds where you might change between the top couple of gears. This all said, it a good habit to get into to double de-clutch between gears it takes a while to get use to matching speeds but once you know how to do it no syncro is no problem!

Tractor data does not report 1310 transmission to be Synchromesh. Tractor data for most parts is pretty accurate with very occasionally wrong information posted. I don't think you can shift on the fly hence grinding. I'd pick up a gear needed and use unless I need to change ground speed.

It's true that none of them were synchronized. While it is possible to effect a gear change or two without clashing, it isn't easy.

our 6700 has the same style of trans, and yea they are not syncro, but easy enough to change on the fly, you just need to match the engine RPM and double de-Clutch.
It takes a bit to get the hang of it, but once you do it's a piece of cake

I have run my 1700 for 30 years now and have never changed gears while moving. Even in road gear 4-3 or 4-4 if I need more speed I come to a complete stop, shift gears and start moving again. Have never had a clutch problem yet either. Solution: Always start out in the gear you need to use. If you find you need to gear up or gear down, stop, change gears, start moving again. Your transmission will last the lifetime of the tractor. There is no need to go to idle when changing gears either, just stop push in the clutch, wait 2 or 3 seconds, shift, and let the clutch back out and go. The govenor takes care of the engine speed. Set the engine speed with the hand throttle and only change it to get to the speed you want to work with. Never use the foot throttle either. I have never used mine after the first day when I was green, like you are.
