PT2422/25 Trailer Package:
Has anyone rebuilt 2425 wheel motors because they are worn--instead of leaking? I have one that I would call "good" but the other three seem to "go along for the ride". One of the front units always spins on a hard pull, the others seldom if ever spin. When I raise all the wheels off the ground, for a test, the "good" one has smooth resistance to hand turning, the other three have various degrees of almost freewheeling with a "not smooth" resistance as they are hand turned. I have not as yet attempted any bypass tests. Unit has about 1400 hours, new Robin engine, all pumps replaced in last 250 hours or so. It was a 2422, but the new engine is a 25HP. I bought used, don't know if any of the wheel motors have been replaced--I suspect at a minimum, one has been replaced or rebuilt.

Bill,

You could put a gage in the loop and see what the pressure is. Some wheel motors have built in brakes, that are spring applied, so turning the wheels is not a good test. The spinning wheel may be spinning because of lack of traction. Probably the best way to test the motors, is to take them to a hydraulic shop and have them test the motors, They should be able to set them up and run them, stall them, and determine which one are good bad or whatever. Have you ever put the front end against a tree and see what all the wheel motors are doing. Slipping, spinning, stalling the engine, etc?

Thanks, JJ
The left front wheel will dig a hole in the ground when pushing on a tree or other solid object. The other three do not spin in this situation.
When I jam the bucket into the ground--so that the machine will not move-- and lift the front wheels off the ground, the left front will turn, but none of the other wheels turn. I would have thought the right front would turn under these conditions, but it does not. I probably won't do any extensive "tear-down" troubleshooting until near winter, as I can still use the machine this summer. Do you know if these Motors can be repaired if they are "worn"? This may be a good time to check into the "high-torque" replacements. I will also do more troubleshooting with a pressure gauge, etc, later in the year.

Bill,

You would have to look at a hyd schematic to see which way those wheel motors are configured. I am thinking two of the motors are in series, and the 3000 psi is applied with each getting 1500 psi, then the two series circuits are in parallel. Somebody correct me if I am wrong. You could have one or two wheel motors bypassing and still do some work. On a good wheel motor, with out brakes, it should be very hard to turn the good wheel, whereas the worn wheels will turn easy because of wear. One wheel may try and turn another because it is acting as a pump. In order to test which wheels are in series, raise the machine off the ground, and turn one wheel, the other wheel connected in series, will try and turn. Then you will have your answer. Someone had mention a while back about the left front and the right rear are in series, but I don't know for sure. Pt should be slapped around real hard for not supplying us with hydraulic schematics, or making them available on their website. They should be throughly ashamed.
