In NE Kansas, when do the fuel retailers change from #2 to #1? I asked two of the legal (?) alien attendants, and they had no idea what I was asking.

It is 80 something today, but that's not normal for this time of year.

I am in New York state and the stations usually switch over around the middle of November.

Hi oldballs,

It is usually around November 1. They base it on the average frost date for the area. Bear in mind they just start adding #1 to the #2 so only getting partial credit for the #1 till the turnover uses up the #2.

I use Power Service white bottle year round so I don't have to worry about it.

Thanks guys. I was low on diesel stock, and was going to wait a couple more weeks. But I filled up my supply (25 gallons) and always add Power Service (white) anyway. That should take me well into winter. Never had a diesel fuel problem to date....nor with gasoline having added Stabil to every one of those 5 gallon containers (4) as well. Our normal winter low temps aren't that low anyway.
Cheers,
Mike

I also use Power Service; White bottle winter, Grey bottle summer.

Is this Power Service / White bottle / Grey bottle some thing temperature/cold weather related?

Anyone in the deep south do this? Should I be, in south Alabama?

Power Service in the white bottle provides higher cetane and lube. It also prevents gelling and water build up. It is a good additive in any weather year round. Other types provide more specific protection. Rescue 911 is added if the fuel has already gelled or filters are clogged by wax.

I'd check with other Alabaman's in the deep South part. I doubt that you'd need to add anything due to ambient temps. However the Cetane rating of the supplier may be an issue. Mine says that his Cetane diesel rating is 40 or greater. My Kubota OE manual say to use a Cetane of 45 or greater at this altitude. Thus I use Power Service (white ) year around to cover the possibility of minus 0 deg temps and to boost the Cetane rating.
Cheers,
Mike

This is from the Power Service Website
White Bottle:
Diesel Fuel Supplement +Cetane Boost is a winterizer/antigel that is used in the cold winter months to prevent fuel gelling and keep fuel-filters from plugging with ice and wax. When temperatures drop, paraffin (wax) in ULSD fuel will gel stopping fuel from flowing through the engine, and water in the fuel can freeze on the facings of fuel-filters, blocking fuel flow. This Arctic Formula provides trouble-free winter operation for diesel fuel.

Diesel Fuel Supplement +Cetane Boost is intended for use only during cold winter months when temperatures drop below +30F. Use Diesel Kleen +Cetane Boost (in the silver bottle) for peak performance in non-winter months. If your vehicle will not start or gain power in cold temperatures, use Diesel 911 (in the red bottle).
Benefits

Prevents fuel gelling
Protects against fuel-filter icing
Boosts cetane for faster cold starts
Contains Slickdiesel Lubricator to protect fuel pumps and injectors from increased wear caused by Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel
Effective in all diesel fuels, including ULSD and biodiesel blends
Does not contain alcohol of any kind
Safe for use in all diesel engines
Will not void engine manufacturer's warranty when used as directed

Grey Bottle:
Diesel Kleen +Cetane Boost is a total injector cleaner and performance improver that cleans injectors, boosts cetane and lubricates fuel injection components. To realize the benefits of today’s cleaner-burning fuels, new technology is required to maximize performance. This Max HP Formula restores lost power, smooths rough-running engines and improves fuel economy up to 8%.

Diesel Kleen can be used year-round, but it is not a diesel fuel winterizer or antigel. When winter temperatures drop below + 30°F. use Diesel Fuel Supplement +Cetane Boost (in the white bottle) to provide maximum winter protection for your diesel engine.
Benefits

Cleans dirty injectors and prevents injector sticking in High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) and older systems
Removes deposits on injectors and nozzle tips and prevents future deposits
Boosts cetane up to 6 numbers – engines run smoother with less power lag and faster cold starts
Boosts power – reduces need for downshifting
Improves fuel economy up to 8%
Contains Slickdiesel Lubricator to protect fuel pumps and injectors from increased wear caused by Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel
Effective in all diesel fuels, including ULSD, biodiesel and biodiesel blends
Does not contain alcohol of any kind
Safe for use in all diesel engines
Will not void engine manufacturer's warranty when used as directed

I use the white bottle year around. Last winter we had a couple of weeks below zero with a few nights at -30 to -40 and I had the fuel gel even with the white bottle. The red took care of it in a very short order. What I figured out later is when I usually fill my bulk tank it is in the late fall, but last year I did it in May so I got summer fuel which didn't work very well in the cold
