Do you let him know you appreciate his work? Do you let his boss know?
I am sure many here have electricians, plumbers, HVAC servicemen, cable TV and satellite dish installers, etc. who visit their homes for repairs and installations of various systems. Since I am quite handy at most trades, we rarely need to have anyone here aside from HVAC work. Two days ago we had an issue with our AC and contacted the company we have used since 1993, the serviceman they sent out was someone we have never met before....it was near 6 pm on a 94 degree afternoon and he had obviously had a long and tiring day before arriving here yet he was very polite, cheerful and worked as fast as he possibly could, left his work area clean of all debris and took the time to answer several questions I had in detail.
I offered him a cold beverage to take with him and when I shook his hand I complemented him on his work ethic and tipped him a 10-spot for a 40-minute service call....something I always do when a tradesman does a good job for us. The next day I emailed his boss and told him how much we appreciated his employee's work ethic and good attitude.
I recall when I was about this man's age (about 31 or so) I was engaged in the service industry myself and I probably didn't have a cheerful or helpful attitude sometimes after working a frantic 10 hour day in lousy weather...which was why I appreciated his strong work ethic all the more.
So, how many of you take the time the thank or tip a good and capable tradesman, and do you let his boss know about thier good work? I will NOT go into the subject of those who deliver poor service.
