Thought I'd offer some entertainment for the evening. 4 ton fertilizer buggy heading down the highway when the rim absolutely lets go and rolls past me in my truck. Cars in the other lane were skidding and swerving. Luckily no one got hurt. This is a big implement tire. I have $1,600 worth of fertilizer waiting IMG_2658.JPGIMG_2663.JPGIMG_2665.JPG on some trailer repairs and it's supposed to rain tomorrow. Always exciting....

Thats about a messed up feeling wondering where the tire that passed you came from. Been there and done that. Glad to know there was nobody hurt. WOW......

You are lucky, all things considered.

Who owns the buggy?

Did the rim let go because the lug nuts were not properly torqued?

Borrowed the buggy from the fertilizer dealer, luckily. It'll need a new rim, tire and spindle. Lug nuts are trashed. I even think it messed up some of the gearing on the spreader mechanism.

I think that's exactly what happened. I didn't bother checking them cause I just assumed someone was servicing it. When I had it in my barn, I lifted it up so that the weight was off the good tire, viola, the lug nuts were loose. Just amazing how folks take care of things.

This brings back long lost memories from my college days. I used to haul cattle to and from feed lots for extra income with my 1 ton ford and 30 foot cattle trailer between atascadero ca and santa barbara. One day we were driving slong down the grade into atascadero and a wheel goes flying past us. My buddy says "look, some moron lost a tire".

When we getto feedlot, we see one of our 4 tires isgone. Bolts sheared off.

We sure felt stupid. Never did find the tire.

Great fun. Happened to me once when the bolts sheared off. Barely felt it in the truck but did catch it in the rear view mirror.

Improper torque. Overloaded.

Many years ago my dad and I were delivering a load of soybeans to our buyer. Dad had shifted from first to fifth. When he shifted into high range we heard a loud grinding sound. I looked out the right side of the truck and the rear wheels were rolling into the ditch. There we sat on the side of the road with a truck load of soybeans and a sheared axle. Those were the days.

Pulling a smallish converted boat trailer to flatbed I was hauling 20+ bags of Portland cement from Menards to do a footing project. I felt a bump and looked in the left mirror and saw the wheel rolling beside and heading between the trailer and truck. As quick thinking as I am, I figured I will slow down slowly and keep the rolling tire corralled between the trailer and truck. But, just then the wheel went under the trailer and the left of the trailed jumped about 3 feet and dumped every bag of concrete into a pile in the ditch. I had a spare so I changed the broken wheel and commenced the reload of busted bags of cement. After I loaded most of it and looking like the Pillsbury dough boy I took off. 3 miles up the road I broke the other wheel off. This time nothing happened except drag the axle through the gravel. I was only 2 miles from home so i went and got my tandem axle heavy duty trailer to reload the cement again. Then all was good. Does any body want to buy a slightly used trailer?

When riding with my boss in his Studebaker truck, coming home from a job, a wheel passed us. We were pulling a concrete mixer. The wheel crashed into the front door of a corner drug store. That's all I remember. It was about 65 years ago.
Cheers,
Mike

I had a friend that was pulling his bass boat back from a tournament came down a pretty good hill into the city limits and his trailer jumped the ball. It was his fault was that he used some aluminum D rings from Wally World to hook his safety chains into, so as he was braking down to the lower speed, the boat passed him up, ran up onto the sidewalk and demolished a sign advertising a bed and breakfast before stopping.

I'll never forget his comment - "I thought that SOB looked familiar when it passed me"
