Where are the gnats?

I'm not complaining, but I've noticed a dramatic absence of buffalo gnats so far this Spring. I've been working in my garden during the past two weeks planting tomatoes, etc, which over the past several years has been done with a cloud of buffalo gnats buzzing around my head dive bombing by ears and nose. This year there's nothing -- maybe one or two have buzzed me. Are others noticing this? I'm guessing that the usually dry Spring that we've had this year has a lot to do with it.

We seem to have fewer black flies this year. Maybe because the early warm weather brought them out too soon, and then froze them up?

We had a lot of gnats last year and earlier this very warm spring but then we had a few hard freezes a few weeks ago and they haven't returned - yet.

Same in our portion of VA. We saw a lot of gnats a month or so ago and now none. I did notice more dragon flies than I have ever seen in my life.

As smaller insects come out the dragon flies are ever where. I have never seen them eat in fly as I do this year.

We are Blessed to have a lot of Lady Bugs this year.

Yeah, I noticed that also. I don't miss them a bit. Where in western Il are you? I live in the Macomb area.

Same here in NY they came out when we got that really warm weather at the end of March and April and then we got a bit of freezing at night and that seemed to do them in.

Had clouds of gnats in April here in the Virginia mountains, few now. Flies appear about average, but bees are doing very well. Lots of wasps. Been tearing out weeds and brush now to get ahead of the abundant yellow jacket/hornet nests that make work in late summer a real gamble.
