WHERE DO YOU KEEP YOUR DIRT ?

About the only thing you can do is put it in a pole barn or tarp it. There is an interesting thing that happens if you store dirt under a clear tarp in full sun - it gets superheated and kills off a lot of the weed seed but if it is stored that way too long, it also kills off beneficial bacteria that helps the soil, in other words - it'll kill the soil and you'll have to add a bunch of compost to bring it back.

L,
I keep dirt, rock, clean sand and brush piles (waiting to be burned) under tarps with plastic 1 gallon milk cartons filled with sand tied to the eyelets to anchor them down. Works like a charm. The reason for the covered brush piles is I can only burn in the Winter when there is lots of snow on the ground due to all the Red Pine needles on the ground in my area.

We had a rather large pile of composted material that I wanted to hang onto for the garden so we purchased an inexpensive tarp at harbor freight. Used empty milk jugs filled with play sand to keep the tarp in place and because the pile was tarp-ed there were no weeds or grass growing in it when we needed it.

Weeds haven't been a problem this year. The dirt all changed to slurry and ran down the driveway where it clogged up the water turnouts, so the rain could carry off all the gravel. It rains 4 or 5 days every week so I can't repair it fast enough to get gravel on the drive to hold it in place. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

When I first purchased my place I went Round-up crazy and killed all of the weeds and grass in my 300 foot driveway thinking it would look so much neater. It looked real neat until the rainy season started and a bunch of the dirt, sand and gravel washed down hill and sat at the end of my driveway. After repairing the mess I encourage weeds, grass or any thing else that will hold the soil in place. It has not fully recovered yet after three years but it is getting there. I have not gone so far as to fertilize the driveway but it has crossed my mind.

Weeds haven't been a problem this year for you, but they have been for me.
I have 3 fair seized dirt piles. One of them is so gown up in weeds you can't even see it.

( as Dliston says. this summer I keep it right out in the open field. What rain. what weeds. Too dry to have either! )

It's been very dry here also but it din't take much to water weeds so they there are thriving well on the dirt piles.

Hasn't rained much here either - usually only when I need dry dirt from the dirt pile which changes it to unusable mud.
