i am getting ready to buy a 6 ft rotary mower and have found that different brands have different size gearboxes for the same width cutter. where does the size of the gearbox come into play as far as performance. i have a 30hp tractor and am looking at a 6ft cutter with a 45 hp gearbox, which seems kind of small, considering the 5ft hog i have now, has a 65 hp gearbox. i am really confused about this gearbox hp issue and just want to make sure i buy the right cutter.

Basically, The output shaft is bigger on the big gearbox and has more splines. Usually the input shafts are configured the same. Internal gearing is heavier on the bigger box. The small box should be ok as long as you keep your slip clutch adjusted correctly. Ken Sweet
