So I overheated the motor in my 1702D a few years ago and ended up with, hard starting, running ruff, and lots of blow by. I'm fairly mechanical and figured I'd warped the head or blown the head gasket and tore into it only to find neither of those issues. I figure maybe cracked rings or something but haven't gotten into the motor any further to find out. Problem now is I tore it apart couple years ago and now some of the parts may be misplaced and there is some rust on the cylinder walls. I'm sure I could just do a full rebuild and buy any parts I lost. But, I'm getting frustrated with trying to find parts. I've contacted Hoye a couple times and they assure me they should have the parts but won't follow through with telling me what all incidental parts I may need or giving me a quote. Now I'm thinking it'd just be a whole lot easier if I could buy a good used motor from a wrecker or something, but where? Anybody know if there are other motors that bolt in the same way and would fit? I don't know tractors well enough to know if tractor motors are similar, like a "Chevy small block" covers a lot of different V8 motors that are usually similar enough to bolt in. Anybody got any good ideas? Info from a similar experience?

TIA,
Bryan

Bryan,

1. Buy a parts manuals
2. make a list of what you need to rebuild your engine
3. Call Aaron at Hoye tractor and order what you need
4. Aaron At Hoye is not a mind reader, he sells you what you ask for along with great advise on how to install it.

Rebuilding an engine will be a lot cheaper than buying another one.
Many years ago I had no clue how to rebuild a diesel engine, so I rolled up my sleeves and dove into it.... and you know what, I liked it!

Now... that's what I do for a living and I like it.

If I did it so can you!

Your best bet is to rebuild your engine. I seriously doubt there is a suitable engine available in the country. If there were I'm sure it would be in the multi $1000 range and may still need overhauling. There is no way Hoye or anyone else can tell you what parts you "may have misplaced".

Ernie, you got in there while I was thinking and typing.

I'm not asking them to read my mind. Just knowing that if I wanted to change rings that I'd need a such and such and a whosawhatsit, and while I'm at it it'd be a really good idea to replace the thingamajig too. Definitely not asking them to know what I may have misplaced. They've been fine on the phone but have failed to follow up on anything I've asked them to follow up on like a quote for parts I know I needed or suggestions on parts I may not have known I needed.

Ernie, I think I talked to you on the phone this afternoon. I may keep trying to get this one running because if it were I could probably sell it for what I bought it for or just try to make do with it even though it's a bit smaller than I think I need. But I may trade it in to you too, who knows. Can you tell me again what company down south you suggested might have a motor?

Thanks,
Bryan

WillaminaOR,
If you dont mind, would you PM me who you were talking with? I always stress the importance of calling customers back and would like to talk to the person that you are waiting on a call back from.

In their defence though, 6 out of the 8 people that work here were out of the office Thursday & Friday (we had our family vacation & 1 of our guys left to join the army). PLUS one of the two guys left behind has only worked for us 3 days . It may have just been bad timing.

Hi, Aaron @ Hoye, sorry to say it's been this time last year or maybe even a bit before then that I called, but also maybe a year or so before. If I'm remembering right I broke down summer of 2007, I think I called shortly there after, again tax refund time in 2008 and I think 09 too. I don't recall who I talked too.
