Guys, I live in the FL panhandle - I need 5" 8' long fence posts and they don't seem to exist here - Everyone uses 4x4s for whatever they do.

Where is a farm store in S. Al I could get these at?

Thanks

I know the easy reply is TSC, Rural King, or Orshelns but we don't have those Luxuries :(

Can't help on the round 5" fence posts, but I did want to mention that if you have to use 4x4 posts, I would ask for Jumbo 4x4. They measure 4 1/8" x 4 1/8". They use them up here for typical wood fence to help handle the wind in housing developments. Have you tried animal feed stores? Sometimes they carry fencing, too.

Feed stores are pretty small around here - Trouble finding a fence post - Pretty stupid huh? I may end up going with 4 x 4s - At least I could get those delivered.

Not sure where in the Panhandle you are..... but around here I get my fence posts from Altha Farmers CO-OP. They have 3 stores, Marianna, Altha, and Blountstown.

Several of the Feed Stores around here also have them available. Is there a Southern States around your area?

You can also try calling Panhandle Lumber and Supply over in Bonifay and see what they have.

Good Luck!

Thanks Stu - I'm in Fort Walton Beach - I'll check out your advice.

If I do end up going with 4x4s any thoughts as to the expected lifetime of them compared to regular fence posts?

Just two mouths ago, I removed the cedar fence with regular 4x4s between my neighbor and myself. My neighbor had build that fence in 1980 when these houses were new. (27 years ago) I found only one post rotten and it actually had water it its hole(low spot). I put in all new cedar fence.
Now, two years ago on my Dad's farm in Iowa, we removed a cattle feedlot fence with 5" x 8' creosote posts that was built around 1975 (30 years old) and found 1/2 the posts were unreuseable=1/5 or more rotten around the contact area between soil and air. But 1/2 will be used for another fence or as "repair" posts. We had two pickup loads, one junk and one load reuseable. The cedar posts are in a grass enviroment(yard) and the 5" creosote posts were in a manure and dirt enviroment.
If livestock is going to be up against the fence, I would think the 5"x8' would be the way to go.

Have you tried Home Depot, Lowes, or any other lumber yard? ...just an idea.

I have found many treated 4x4s that outlasted creosote posts. But the new treated boards are made with a different preservative so all bets are off. However, they still make 2 grades of treated posts. One for above ground use and one for in ground use. Be sure to check the label and get the heavily treated ones for below ground use.

RGood,

In Dothan, Alabama there is a store called "The Woodpile". Call 334-983-4506. Ask for Seaborn. They are located on Hwy 231 N., just a couple of miles north of the circle in Dothan.

They have NEVER failed me in ordering "off" sized wood products. They have a great relationship with Jimmy Raines (the owner of "YellaWood" in Abbeville, AL) and can get any type/size of wood you want.

As an example, I recently ordered four 8"x8"x18' beams from him and they came "marine" treated for water submersion, but you can get any type of treat you want. I built bridges out of them.

Good luck on your project.

Podunk
