Where are you located? I assume you are looking for a flat rack hay wagon. Send me a PM and I might be able to help find you one.

that is dependent on what you think they should cost. To buy a new running gear you are looking at at least $1k. Then you need to buy tires for it or scrounge some up and get them mounted if you can't do it yourself. If you have to buy flotations you then start looking at over $1500 for just the running gear that can now roll. Figure out what your wood will cost to build the deck, and if you want to figure in your time you are close, if not over, $2k for a simple wood decked wagon /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I find used running gears all the time though that can be bought from anywhere between $20 to $1k (nice heavy tandem jobs). The $20 gear I bought and gave to my neighbor. It needed one wheel but otherwise was in great shape. It was an old Allis Chalmers gear. I tossed one of my spares on it and hauled it down the road with no problem and it had sat in the weeds for a couple years. I would have liked to keep it but my neighbor has been good to me and asked me to find him one if it was cheap enough. So I helped him out and hopefully I will find that good of a deal again but I doubt it.

For as simple as these gears are I have no idea why they cost so much new.

A farm auction is probably the best place to get one. No farmer is probably going to bid against you--they are practically obsolete as far as regular farm use goes.

???????????????????????????!

4-wheeled "hay racks" sell like they're made of gold to all the farmers in this neck of the woods. Still as common as ever. Hay, straw, and even tobacco farmers use 'em. They sell at prices unheard of a few years back. Whenever I get a chance to buy one cheap, I latch on to them. (I've got 5 of my own)

Good ones with running gear rated 8 ton or heavier usually bag $600 or $700 at the lowest, and I've even seen a nice 10 ton gear with good bed sell for $1250 last summer.

They're sure not obsolete here!

Ok then, you are not that farm from me. There were 3- 5 ton wagons at an auction this summer then went for around $150-$200 each. They were nothing spectacular but they were in good shape. I will ask around and see what I can find.
