Kubota BX-22
I've been reading the postings in this forum about different brands of tillers, and the thing I've noticed about almost all of them is that they are very EXPENSIVE. I'd like a 40-48" 3-point tiller for my Kubota BX-22, but it seems kind of nuts to spend $1000 on a tiller to grow $50 worth of vegetables. The best price I've found so far on a new one is $1089 for a King Kutter at Tractor Supply. Ouch. I was hoping for $500 especially since it doesn't have it's own engine (some of the walk behind Troy-Built tillers with an engine are $500) . I've been looking all over the net for things like "farm classifieds" and found a couple of used tillers, but they are in places like Mississippi which is a long drive from Ohio.

Because of health problems as I get older I don't think I'll be able to handle a walk-behind tiller for many more years so I think the best solution is one for the tractor where I can "ride".

So, does anyone know of a good used classified site for farm implements where I might find a used tiller in Ohio? I'm willing to drive up to 300 miles any direction from Dayton, but driving to Mississippi is too far, and paying shipping is so high I would be better off paying the $1089 at TSC.

Thanks for any tips...

Mike, the best bet for you is to watch your local paper want adds and auctions . also pick up a copy of dairy and farming ..There is a fellow about 2 miles from me that has a couple 4' tillers...brand is unknown (grey market no doubt)..sort of rough but workable..think he was selling them 3 to 5 hundred......hope i helped a little...Sid

Mike,
We have a weekly classified that might have one or two in it. It comes out on Weds. I'll keep an eye out for one and reply here if I see any.

Good luck.
Around me I was told by several people that a used tiller was hard to come by and I have to agree after looking around for one. I went to a large farm equipment consignment auction a couple week ago, after I had already boughten a new KK tiller, and there wasn't a tiller on the lot.
I think if you figure out the seed, fertilizer, insecticide, loss to critters.... it would be hard to justify the expense of gardening for personal use other than you grew it yourself. So what's the price of a new tiller? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I looked at some tillers that were used. And $500 is about what they were asking for them and they were beat all to (well fill in the blank) and I would not have bought one of them even at $100. This is what told me to buy new. And them old ones probably would have been fine but I just could not see buying something in that shape and then have to re-build it and end up close to new.

Mike,
If you think a used Yanmar tiller might work behind your BX see Wayne at LMTC . He has used Japanese tillers for somewhere around $600. He is located in Blanchester, not too far from you. I run one behind my NH TC18 and it does fine. I personally think the Yanmar tine does better than the "domestic" brands. But that's my opinion only.

Wayne was apparently watching this post and sent me mail. I'll be visiting him soon. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'll 2nd the LMTC recommendation. I bought a used Yanmar tiller from him and it has worked great. I went down and looked at what he had, then tried the auction route thinking I might be able to get a decent one under his price. I found that any tiller that was worth owning went for close to 80-95% of what they cost new and the ones that were going to be more fixing than using were probably in the 50% range. So one Sat after having been outbid on 2 tillers at an auction (what looked to have been a Caroni at one time went for about $500 and a low hrs KK went for almost $1k), I went back down and bought a used Yanmar from Wayne at what turned out to be a very good value. Not a bad drive from the Dayton area either.
