Where to get a 12v Generator

Hi Everyone-
Had time to work on my 35 yesterday. Im thinking the generator is bad. While it was running, I disconnected the positive battery terminal and the engine quit. My question(s) now are: (1) Should I try anything else before I conclude this is the problem? (2) Should I try to get the one that is on it rebuilt? Is is possible to find a new or reman generator and where can I find one?

Check in your community for a local " Auto electric shop " they rebuild generator and alternators and it is a whole lot cheaper than buying new or even rebuilt...I have done it with my JD 3020 and it saved a few hundred dollars.

How fast was engine running when cable was taken off? Unless it was 1200 rpm or more it should die as most gen charging systems don"t work at idle speed. If battery is good you can quick check gen at fast idle or more by grounding field terminal on gen. If amp gauge shows charge gen is OK, voltage regulater is not controlling gen field circuit correctly, may need points cleaned inside or whole assembly replaced. An other gen test, remove fanbelt, use a jumper wire at gen armature terminal to hot side of battery. If it is good gen pulley will turn like an electric motor, but not fast. If it won"t spin, and grounding field showed no charge it needs work. May be as simple as a good cleaning and freeing up sticking brushes.
