Maybe a tractor forum is not the best place to post this but I need to rant a little. My wife bought her first new car, an Explorer, in May. She has been hit twice already. The second incident occurred today in a restaurant parking lot while I was strapping our nine month old in the car seat. The teen came barreling in the parking lot and side swiped the car on the drivers side while my wife, daughters, and I were on the passenger side. The first incident also occurred in a parking lot by a teen. And my wife's last car was hit in a parking lot by a teen while she and my daughter were loading groceries in the car. I will bring it back to tractors in that I was hundred miles from looking at a used tractor when my wife called in a panic when the grocery incident occurred.

Blame the safety police of this forum that don't think "kids" should do anything until they are 18, or older.

This is terrible to read about, sounds like a close call, Glade to hear no one was hurt, .... Your question was where do kids learn to drive? They start to learn at a very early age and learn from the school of video games, Having a son grow up throughout the 80's-90's during the start of very graphic games, I would watch him from a distance playing these games and he would take them very seriously, at one point I had to take it from him and explain that this is only a game, His reply was no it's not, that he can actually imagine himself in the game in the drivers seat driving the cars etc, etc, and crashing into another car was part of the game.... of course this was when he was 11-14 years old, He had to re-learn how to drive all over again once he was old enough to get his drivers licenses:D and then the crazy movies fast and furious came out with all the ricer cars speeding around town, did that movie help out.... Not! so basically the answer to you question is they learn from what is suppose to be our so called entertainment,

Yes we all had our time behind the wheels of some fast cars, young, indestructible and reckless, most of us made it but some of us didn't, and the ones who didn't were the eye openers for us as examples just how dangerous driving cars fast can be if driven in the wrong manner, or driven while under the influence,............... I could rant on and on about this,..... But I'll close by saying it starts at the home, being able to impose the right morals and set positive examples in our children, in 2 words--> (Respect & Consideration)

What it all comes down to is that more parents need to take the time to teach their kids what it takes to be a good driver. Not only the skills required but the importance of focus at all times.

I learned to drive on tractors, go carts, dirt bikes and dune buggies...I learned respect for the vehicle quickly.

I only had my permit for about 2 hours before I got my license (you could do that in the 80's)...But my dad still took me to an empty mall parking lot, in the snow, with a '76 GMC 4x4 P/U and had me do donuts and slides to see how helpless that actually is, or can be...I learned more in 1/2 hour than any other time in my life...Respect for the vehicle..You could also get away with that kind of training in the '80's too.

I should have said in my original post that some of these kids never learned to drive. My eleven year old drove for the first time Thanksgiving day. She had been asking to drive so that afternoon I took her to the hunting lease and let her drive around the old logging roads. The funny thing was yesterday while waiting for the police my daughter said dad I think I could park a car without hitting anything. This coming from a kid with all of one hour of driving experience and no time on asphalt.

Waiting for the police? This doesn't sound good.

when my son went to get his license he flunk the exam and didn't get them, he flunk it the second time, it wasn't until the 3rd try when he actually got them but only pass by the skin of his teeth, and not only him but many other young men his age was struggled to pass as well. when he was younger before being interested in driving he was more into racing dirt bikes, and it was all go wide open, His focus was on how to handle and maneuver his bikes,
and he done well at it teaching himself to ride,...
unfortunately this didn't teach him a thing about passing a drivers exam;) and like quite a lot of kids driving these days they might have pass the exam but how do they do in real live scenarios? do they really know how to apply what they learn from the books to driving on the roadways? some do yes! but most of them no they don't, they would just assume pass you on a double line then a single, Just so as long as there nothing coming, I've seen it before many times, the speed limit simply is not fast enough for them:cool:
I could go on and on with examples but I think you get the point, Kids today just do not have a courteous driving habits, and again to correct this its got to start at the home, How many of us are guilty of showing our children the wrong way to drive, (Not in a literal since), but more as when you might not be thinking they are paying attention in the back seat when you pass that car at over 75 mph in a 55 mph speed zone, or when you roll through that stop sign instead of coming to a full stop,.... just little things that could have a negative effect on what a youngster will do himself when he gets old enough to drive, our children today poke fun at the "Geeks" in school and all their perfect grade score etc, etc, but my guess is they also grow up to be good drivers just as they have been good students and where does these " Geeks become so smart? from parents at home helping to teach them the values of Life and all things along the way,.... then when they grow up they most always follow the path there parents bestowed into them,

Most kids dont get to learn to drive, they re parents let them take drivers ed. Which in our school in the 90s was let them drive to town with the teacher in the back a few times after they watched videos and did home work. They dont get to drive in parking lots, on gravel or narrow roads or in traffic.

Dad started me out on an old Springfeild lawn tractor with out a deck when I was about 7 or so. I moved up at 8 to an old B Allis Chalmers and then up to a junked dodge Omni dad had for a farm ride. Then when I was 12 Dad brought home an 84 S10 4 speed.. Dad aften had me driving all the back roads from town to town for experience.

I did have one serious accident when I was 21 but it was just bad luck. Now kids get their lisence and get turned out without alot of real world experiences.

My wife took drivers ed and her parents wouldnt let her get her liscence till she was 18. I still hate to ride with her.
