Tractor
Mahindra 4025 / Kubota RTV500 / Bad Boy ZT Elite 60"
After delivery of my Mahindra 4025 my neighbor stopped by to have a look. He had never looked at one up close, said it looked like a nice tractor but did not know of anyone that had actually owned one and was not sure about long term durability from a Indian mfg.
About 3 months ago a new John Deere 5055 D arrived at his place so I wanted to get a good look also, it has about 14 more HP give or take and is also visibly larger than the 4025. It is clearly a well built quality tractor. However as I looked at the front axle ( much beefier than the 4025 ) I saw the nameplate that read "Assembled in India" on the tractor frame, I said nothing. Then looking at the engine nameplate it clearly read " Made in India". I was aware that the smaller Deere's were made over seas as are many other brands but I was not aware that the larger models were also. At what size does the Deere company start manufacturing " Amaerican " made tractors? Are the parts sent over there, assembled and shipped back because of cheeper labor. Is this a more economical series to improve sales. Like I said there was nothing wrong with the tractor but I was really surprised to learn this.

When I was shopping (ended up buying a 4110), I noticed an interesting detail on the Deere site. Everything they offered (that I looked at) that was 50hp and under listed "Yanmar" as the mfr.

If you look on Deere's website at the bottom of their specification page/model you will see country of "manufacture". Pune,India is listed for this model.:)

Deere owns a factory in Pune India. They also own factories in a number of other countries around the world and have for years. This includes factories in the U.S. All of these factories make Deere tractors to Deere's specifications. This is very different from buying a tractor and simply putting your name on it.

At one point in time Deere bought Yanmar tractors and had them branded as a Deere. Currently the engines for Deere's 2000 and 3000 series are made by Yanmar in Japan but they are not Yanmar tractors. For example the 3032E and 3038E are built in Georgia with Yanmar engines.

Tractor data has a lot of information about Deere tractors by factory and country. http://www.tractordata.com/farm-tra...ndeere/johndeere-tractors-factory-sorted.html

Country of origin is really not much of an issue these days. Most large manufacturers have factories outside of the U.S. Just because something is made in the U.S. does not inherently make it better than something made overseas.

What is important is the design, specification and quality of what is built. If a company owns an overseas factory they have much more control over how their product is built versus a company who simply buys someone else's stuff and resells it.

This is not a knock on Mahindra or a plug for Deere, just simply a clarification of why a Deere tractor would be labeled made in India, or Russia or anywhere else for that matter.

It was a fairly big "point in time". Somewhere around 100,000 compact tractors over 25 years were built by Yanmar and labeled as JDs.

If you look at the tractor world in the last 50 years, not just recently, we find that it has been very international in nature for a long time. Tractors were being imported/exported in decent quanitites long before it became a big deal in the car world. I currently have a JD 2750 and a JD 770 on my lot, neither built in the USA, both are fine tractors.

john deere builds no tractors in the usa but the larger farming tractors and they have rebadged zetor mahindra's and many other brands of tractors over the years so u never know what u are buying no matter what brand it is

That is just not a true statement. JD 303XE/4X20/5XXXM tractors are built in Augusta GA. Please do research before making such blanket statements.

Built? or Assembled? What does assembled mean? Place tires and rims on tractor, fill with fluids and fuel and distribute to dealer? Or does it mean taking parts manufactured in different countries and building a complete unit?

JOHN DEERE

John Deere is an American company countries that was founded in 1837. Today they are an international company with a presence in nearly 160 different countries. Their strongest asset has been the strength of their brand and dealer network. John Deere is a nearly a household name and always a consideration when shopping for tractors. Their compact tractor range is assembled in Georgia, and built in cooperation with Yanmar (Japan). There are approximately 1400 John Deere dealers of varying sizes, not all carry the full equipment line.

That is always your guys defense "just assembled". It is like you guys are looking for a tractor 100% made in the U.S with U.S parts...which you should all know is pie in the sky thinking. The level of assembly and production that takes place in Augusta is far greater than what other companies do in the U.S (were they just place tires and loaders on their tractors).

If we think a Ford truck that comes out of the Dearborn plant is "built" in the USA then the JD's that come out of Augusta are "US" built. We export tractors all the time, you ask the rest of the world where these tractors are built and they will tell you "U.S.A".
