I have been looking at Miller plasma cutters.People have told me that Miller and Hobart are the same.If that is true the Hobart is slightly cheaper for similar size.Is the miller built better than a Hobart ?

I looked at both of them and in my opinion neither measured up to the Thermal Dynamics or Powermax. If However you are set on the choice between Miller and Hobart. I would go Miller... But given the choice between everything on the market I went Thermal Dynamics but in my selection it was a toss up between powermax and TD and 100.00 cheaper price won out and I got the TD... I have been impressed ever since.

The larger Miller and Hobart units use Hypertherm torches. The power supplies do look similar....I guess you would have to look at the output specifications....Amperage, Killowatts, duty cycle....to compare.

I have a HyperTherm PowerMax 45. It works great. You may want to consider a Hypertherm. Do some research online will help you decide.

I went with the Miller, it works well and the supplier gave me a deal. He matched the price of simmiler plasma cutter sold by his compition. The miller is much better than the cutter I use at work. That one is a lincoln, with that one I have problems when its very cold or raining.

I have a Hypertherm Powermax 30, Sweet unit, 110/220V self sensing, Ultra portable which is what I wanted. If you buy one, get a good one, is what I was told when I asked for advice. Has been a plug and play unit since I owned it.

I will probably be looking for most work in the 1/4"-5/16" range. But I also want to beable to cut 1/2"-3/4" for logsplitter parts.I want to build a loader for my tractor which should basically cover the cost of the welder and plasma cutter.I was hoping to get a deal on the plasma cutter and welder from the miller dealer.
Does anybody know if Miller is built any better than Hobart ?

I will look at the other two mentioned in the posts.

The Millers are build to a higher standard as they are considered more "commercial", they also have higher duty cycles-this applies to the welders also. A PC that is rated to cut 3/4" is going to be very pricey.

I was looking at Miller pretty strong also and everyone told me that Miller was better than Hobart and that Lincoln was better than Miller as far as welders go.

My brother did pipeline welding for years and always prefers Lincoln for welders.

Miller has what seems to be a really good plasma cutter.

Where I used to work the Co. would only buy Miller welders. We needed a plasma cutter and they wonted to buy Miller I suggested we rent one and tried it on a thick plate and I had the Hypertherm rep bring out a demo there wasn't any comparison the Hypertherm cut much better. This was several years back and Miller may have changed but when I had to replace my Lincoln last year I boughe a Hyperthurm. Check the price of the consumables on any machine this can vary a lot.
